Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring Paul Desmond – Jazz Goes to College, 1950s metal acetate in ‘custom’ made cover, “SFAX Series”.
This is a mysterious example of the LP Jazz Goes to College – by the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond. It is a sixtrack double-sided 12” metal Acetate that plays at 33 1/3 rpm. Each side has a label (shown below) that reads ‘SFAX Series – Long Play Microgroove Recordisk’ and then brief typed details. I obtained this record from an old lady (who answered an advert that I place in a magazine) who has had it – along with a handful of others – for many years. They belonged to her husband and he owned them when they met in the early 1960s and all she could offer as an explanation for him having them is that he had been in the navy and quite often used to come home with odd records from around the world! I am listing this week all five of the Acetates that I bought from her. All but one have this SFAX Series label, and all of them have what effectively is a home-made cover. BUT – not home-made by the lady’s husband. To a greater or lesser extent they have some interesting artwork on the front and the main point to them is that they were made / created at the studio or wherever the records were pressed. Which means that someone involved in the production of the records bothered to make the cover for the benefit of whoever they were intended for, rather than simply housing them in a plain card cover. i.e., this IS a plain card cover but someone has spent some time customising it. As it happens, this particular one is not all that inspiring, but it must have taken at least a few minutes to make. For what it is worth, it is in around VG condition. The record itself is in EX condition on both sides with very little evidence of any play.It is impossible to be an expert in all realms of collecting, and I am honestly representing this item to the best of my knowledge and ability. If the item has a fault then I have mentioned it. I ask that you read the description and examine the photos carefully. I also encourage you to ask any questions you may have during the auction to help clarify identification or condition, as I may inadvertently omit information that you as a collector feel is important. CONDITION. The majority of items that I list are between forty and sixty years old. Some are older and some may be a few years younger. I have described the condition of the item in my text but where applicable I have also ticked the 'used' box as even where an item is 'perfect', it is very old and logic says it must have been handled and probably used at some time over the decades!
ALL of my AUCTION ITEMS are now listed with basic / second class postage FREE in the UK.
They are not actually free to post of course! I have to pay to post them but for UK bidders the price you see at the end of the auction is the total price you pay.
DELIVERY TIMES. Although I have ticked the Royal Mail 2nd Class Standard option, please note that this service is reliable and often is unexpectedly fast. Many people in the UK receive their items within 36-48 hours of payment being received.
I have also listed other faster options for UK postage (Recorded Delivery + Special Delivery) and also various options for overseas buyers that are stated when you click on the P&P Tab.
TRACKING NUMBER. If an item sells for more than £35, (or for a package that has a total value of more than £35) it will need to be sent with a Tracking Number - the Royal Mail's International Signed For service. This costs an additional £4.90 and that price will be added so that both you - the Buyer - and myself are covered under the buyer protection policy.
PACKAGING. Please note that all of my items are well-packed in thick card or in boxes, and then wrapped in good quality brown paper. I do not make any separate charge for packaging materials - everything is included in the final price. Many of my feedback comments mention my good packaging and I will of course continue to meet my own standards.
