Historical Context: The recordings were made in 1934-1935 (though the expedition materials, including the film "Dark Rapture," were released in 1938) by Armand Denis and his wife Leila Roosevelt during their expedition to the Belgian Congo. These were among the earliest field recordings of indigenous African music, featuring the Manbetu, Watusi (Tutsi), pygmy groups, and other Central African peoples.
