Originally recorded at Fontana Studios in Milan, Italy in January 1972 and subsequently released on the Italian Dire label on LP the same year.

Easily overlooked as a piece of obscure 1970s Britjazz nostalgia, and short and sweet at 36 minutes, this is an Italian recording of two suites that pianist Gordon Beck conceived with bassist Ron Mathewson and drummer Daniel Humair in 1972. It is short, but far from insubstantial. The opening section of Suite No 5 reflects Beck's immensely sophisticated grasp of the alternative implications of Bill Evans - his faultless timing of the turn of a fast phrase is always startling, and there's an unexpected amount of free-improv. All in the Morning sometimes sounds like Herbie Hancock baiting Tony Williams in Miles's 1960s band before it becomes an astonishing collective improvisation, Beck's steel-hard chords calling and responding to Humair's chattering snare and lashing rimshots.
John Fordham The Guardian

At the time, this seemed a belated and hard-to-find follow-up for Beck's 1968-69 albums "Experiments With Pops" and "Gyroscope" (both already reissued by Art of Life). Replacing Tony Oxley with Humair and Jeff Clyne with Mathewson was logical because, when Beck took over from George Gruntz and the bassist filled in for Henri Texier, this was the then-current rhythm-section of European-resident Phil Woods. The division of the music into two LP-side-length suites disguises to some extent the amount of variety within the original material, with 'Side One' (as it was) being credited to Beck and 'Side Two' to all three players. But there's a wide span leading from piano-led tunes, recognisably from the same pen as those on "Gyroscope", to free group improvisations that are exciting but not wild. Anyone captivated by the elusive pianist's recent work, or aware of his contributions to European Jazz over the decades, is likely to relish this more that the latest stuff out of Scandinavia.

British pianist Gordon Beck is simply not as well known here in the States as he should be, given his long and fruitful career and hopefully this reissue will help set that right. The propulsive rhythm section of what at that time constituted the Phil Woods Rhythm Machine gets two extended workouts, all recorded in one morning while on a European tour. It would be fine to cite the Bill Evans primer as a major influence on Beck, but it would be selling him short. The breadth and diversity of ground covered in this session is astounding, from gorgeous postbopflurry to sparse and razor-sharp post-Webernianpointalistic free jazz. None of this should come as any surprise, Beck having worked previously with the incredible and irrepressible timbral powerhouse Tony Oxley. In other hands, such forays into experimentation might come off as mere flirtations, but the trio is obviously so comfortable with every gesture, composed or otherwise, that the album coheres beautifully and seamlessly. About half way through the first track, when freer terrain is traveled, Daniel Humairs brushwork is complemented beautifully by Ron Mathewsons effortless fast slides and runs on bass. Eventually, Beck can be found inside the piano, Humair and Mathewson bowing and scraping along with him. The second track has a similar blueprint, except that Humair takes a driving solo that quickly turns funky and everyone follows suit with alacrity.

Purchased: NEW. Immaculate 1st French edition of these excellent seamless free jazz & melodic January 1972 recordings by this fantastic piano trio moonlighting from the Phil Woods European Rhythm Machine while on tour in Italy early one morning. All were major players within the prolific UK & European jazz scenes. Yet more always uncompromising experimental improvisational recordings by this/these fine jazz zone troopers. Once again this player/these players demonstrate a unique affinity and collective mindset for producing such telepathic improvisation. It doesn't always work well but when it does like here it's absolutely glorious! Worth the price of admission for those who are experimentally inclined and not uptight or inclined to become prejudicially divided (as all of us need to be unified worldwide to stave off the stifling New World Order and their tyrannical diabolical aspirations to enslave us all). Beware and please don't be too square!

Cover Condition: Well preserved as new fully laminated Mint with virtually no wear and crisp corners. A few creases on rear & coh rendering it M-.

Inner Sleeve: Original sheer plastic.

Record Condition:  Looks Immaculate M with virtually no hairlines/sleeve-wear and plays the same throughout with little in the way of ANY discernible background noise present. This record hit the turntable very sparingly over the close to 3 1/2+ decades since I've owned it with it played no more than 2-3 times tops I reckon. No upgrade possibly required or desired! This is excellent high powered music here featured in an intimate musical setting providing some cosmic sounds that can send one into the stratosphere if they're ready, willing and able! So now it's your move!

Label Condition: Both=M with no visible spindle marks.

MY PRESERVATION POLICY on many records that I revered was simple and I share it with you now so that you understand why you take virtually no risk buying from me providing the album was bought new and not used originally. When I'd buy a "new" album and it was something I liked a lot and still available (most of my new albums were purchased in the early-mid 1970's!) I'd initially play it between 15-25 times to become familiar with it and then sell it to a friend as a still EX+ well preserved nice copy. (Adding outer & inner plastic sleeves was standard procedure additionally limiting cover wear and/or hairline paper sleeve marks.) Then I'd buy another new copy and in some cases if a particular favorite then yet another, meaning that I only played the 2nd copy (now my 1st) 5-10 times and the 3rd (now my 2nd if I kept 2) once or twice, always initially taping or now in more recent years currently burning to disc 1 copy within the first couple of  plays thus significantly limiting play to this day on most of my lps. I did/do this with many single copy rarities as well so most play was/is on tapes or cd-rs. I bought a lot of CDs of favorite things also which further helped preserve my vinyl and limit play of much of it. Sometimes I also acquired rare British and European vinyl which I never saw imported in stores and sold new in the United States or Canada from contacts I established through mail correspondence during the 1970's. I developed contacts in England, France, Germany, Holland & Norway. Be aware that the MAJORITY of albums or occasionally 45's that I list ARE FREQUENTLY my ONLY COPIES so bid accordingly as you'll not likely see most of them listed by me again.

SO, MOST OF MY ALBUMS ORIGINALLY BOUGHT NEW, STILL ACCURATELY APPEAR VIRTUALLY NEW AND UNPLAYED, AND MOST WERE HONESTLY PLAYED NO MORE THAN 5-10 TIMES AND OFTEN ONLY TWICE OR THRICE AND ARE STILL NEAR MINT!! WHY TAKE THE RISK & HASSLE WITH RETURNS EVEN IF THEY"RE ACCEPTED. SHOP HERE AND REMOVE ALL DOUBT AND DISAPPOINTMENT FROM YOUR FUTURE E-BAY VINYL TRANSACTIONS NOW!
