From the opening guttural bass guitars, shrill riffs, send and return vocal and reversed-out harmonies on "Pantomima", it's clear this record is going to be inescapably powerful. Just the second studio LP from Greg Dulli as a soloist, his storied history as founding member of The Twilight Singers and Backbeat Band, not to mention collaborations with everyone from Foo Fighters to Low Fidelity Allstars, shines through. Precision perfect songwriting, innovative instrumentation, universal appeal and anything but predictable. Terms like "whisky soaked", "all-American rock" and "heart-on-sleeve", apply, but there's breadth and scope too. "Marry Me" threatens to tear your ticker out and stamp on it, albeit with soft acoustic confessions. "Scorpio" takes us into near-operatic levels of balladry. "Sempre" is a rousing anthem that should be riding its steel horse to the top of charts, "Lockless" throws in a lo-fi drum machine curveball. A master at work.
