DUKE JORDAN - JAZZ LABORATORY SERIES VOL. 1 (1957) SIGNAL RECORDS S101 RVG w/ ORIGINAL INSERT

Super rare instructional record on the short-lived late-1950s jazz label Signal, run by Jules Colomby. This is a second pressing from 1957 (no deep groove) and includes the original booklet by Hal Overton, see pictures! The a-side is a great jazz quartet recording led by Duke Jordan, featuring Gigi Gryce, Kenny Clarke, and Oscar Pettiford. The b-side is the same music as the a-side, but with Gryce's sax removed so you can play along. Wonderful recording by Rudy Van Gelder, with "RVG" in the deadwax (see pictures).

Record: G+

No visible issues--if I was only grading visually, it'd be VG+. However, due to some kind of pressing issue there is some significant surface noise throughout. The recording quality is so high that it never totally overpowers the music, and it's least present (if not totally absent) on the first and last tracks of each side. Despite the noise, I found this copy to be genuinely enjoyable to listen to.

Cover: VG

Cover is in solid shape--some tape on top seam, slight staining on top right corner of back cover, some damage to the spine on corners, 2" split in bottom seam. All the imperfections are in the pictures, but I'm happy to provide more upon request.

I ship records with care, the record itself will never be inside the cover but in its own inner sleeve. Comes with plastic outer sleeve, and packaging will always be snug and secure.
