Despite my self image of being rather catholic with regard to my taste in music, I am constantly on the prowl for hard sike. Every new spin precipitates anticipation of inter-galactic guitar riffs, phased vocals and judicious application of reverb, fuzz and even some wah-wah. Yet, when I review my favorite spins list, it's clear those characteristics, however much I might pine for them, are not always requisite components for a great spin.

Although I recognized the 1979 issue date undoubtedly precluded hard sike bits I crave, hope springs eternal. Besides, how could anyone pass on an album entitled Living in a Dream ?? It was a chance well taken. However, though I have come to  rate this album quite highly, devotees of hard rock, glam rock, punk, or metallurgy might want to pass. This spin is, most assuredly, not hard sike... not even close. But it is uncommonly pleasant and melodic, a definite spinner despite some jazz and lounge moves.     

Though quite different in harmonic texture, Dream's trippy introspective lyrics within Living in a Dream tend to remind me of the Hello People's Fusionnn. In fact, the lyrics, imbued frequently with a motif of flight and escapism, are key for this spin. Clips of How Can I Believe and One Day reveal the album's basic thematic and musical constitution.    

Despite an overall consistency, two tracks stand apart from the rest. One Day at a Time, with it's infectious and driving rhythm, is, by far, the LP's most commercial number. And Mr. Barman is an odd cut about a man seeking solace from a bartender as he unveils a wistful tale about the overdose death of his lover, a runaway. The song's soap opera ending does nothing to diminish the rather pensive aura.  

Though there are no losers amongst the album's nine plays, I do favor two cuts. I find Falling Stars a particularly gossamer yet haunting number whose sombre message is in perfect tune with the album's overall themes. And, of course I dig the album's sole de facto lysergic play. Insanity March, is a truly fine slice of sike, delectable manna which quenches that aforementioned thirst of mine. Living in a Dream is a rather a rare private press release and well worth a hear if you can find it !!
