After two decades in London's session trenches, sharing stages and studios with everyone from Nile Rodgers to Gregory Porter, Brazilian bassist and composer Moyses Dos Santos finally steps forward with a debut album that reconnects him with the sounds of his north-eastern upbringing. Inspired in part by his time alongside Azymuth drummer Ivan "Mamao" Conti, the record finds him filtering samba, baiao and church-band soul through the cosmopolitan lens of London's contemporary jazz scene. Opening cut 'Boa Viagem' sets the tone beautifully, its carnivalesque energy equally suited to a street procession or late-night dancefloor. Elsewhere, 'Brazilian Spirit' benefits from the luminous trumpet work of Theo Croker, while 'Saudade' surrounds the vocals of Lynda Dawn with sumptuous arrangements from Brazilian maestro Arthur Verocai. Rich, heartfelt music that never loses sight of the groove.
