Amazing !!! An unbelievable piece: What we have here is an unheard-of PUBLISHER’S DEMO PRESSING of the rare, never commercially released Don Covay album circa 1968.  For those unfamiliar with Publisher’s Demos, these unique recordings were pressed by artists’s publishers (not record labels!!!) in extremely limited press runs (usually not more than 50 to 100) and distributed ONLY to select radio stations across the nation in order to gently “encourage” them to play their client’s music more.  They should be considered a separate, sui generis, subset or subcategory of “private pressings”

The album comes with the neatly typewritten ORIGINAL letter of introduction, personally signed by of the Phil Walden management (Phil Walden was Don Covay’s manager at the time). 1968 was undoubtedly a very difficult year for Phil Walden, as his biggest and net-grossing client, Otis Redding was killed in a plane crash merely months earlier, so I assume that Walden (unsuccessfully) tried to pitch Don Covay as Redding’s successor. 

The album consists of some of the greatest hits Covay recorded for Atlantic label (which, by the way, NEVER bothered to release a fitting “Greatest Hits” anthology of Don Covay) , hits later covered by such stars as Chubby Checker, Aretha Franklin, Booker T. and the MG’s, Steppenwolf,  Rolling Stones,  Etta James, Otis Redding, and countless others.

And, oh…did we forget to mention that the album includes a young black lad named Jimi Hendrix on one track? We did, ha?  How thoughtless of us.  Well, yes, he does, he does…

PLEASE NOTE: THIS ADVANCE/PUBLISHER’S DEMO PRESSING APPARENTLY NEVER HAD A CUSTOM COVER;  THE ALBUM WILL BE SHIPPED IN A PLAIN, GENERIC [WHITE] CARDBOARD COVER. PRIVATE AND TEST PRESSINGS ARE RARELY – IF EVER – FOUND IN CUSTOM (STOCK) COVERS. THE GENERIC COVER IS NOT SEPARATELY GRADED BUT IS IN FINE STATE OF PRESERVATION OVERALL.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Stock (commercially released) versions of this album do not exist

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-        COVER : This publisher’s demo (private) pressing comes without any custom jacket, and will be shipped in a plain, generic, white cardboard cover (NOT SEPARATELY GRADED but in fine shape overall)
