In 1966, Don Cherry was leading a New York quartet with Pharoah Sanders and a European quintet with Gato Barbieri. For his second Blue Note album, he decided to combine these two bands into a Symphony For Improvisers. Both pieces are actually four-part suites.

Former Ornette Coleman trumpeter Don Cherry assembled a quartet with the often volcanic tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Ed Blackwell for his third and final Blue Note album, recorded just two months after "Symphony For Improvisers." They dive into five of the trumpeter's delightful, quirky compositions.
