Dirty Three have always been real enigmas of the rock 'n' roll scene. Scan their resume online and it's likely someone is pointing to their work as post rock. In fact it's really just a kind of contemporary folk that looks not to a deconstructed and reimagined approach, but instead a version of the traditional school that's more vivid, more emotional and more intoxicating because it's just 'more' in general. Like the difference between sticking a CD single on and going to a live show with a band that understand what it means to play in the moment.

Cinder was their seventh major album, and originally arrived in 2005. It was written and recorded during that year while on Phillip Island, in South Eastern Australia, which is a sparse, water breaking rock in the ocean known for its penguins. The result is a work that captivates the senses, filled with camp fire instrumentation and musical phrases that seem to tell aeon-old tales.
