DIRE STRAITS Mark Knopfler's spare, tasteful guitar lines and distinctive vocals mark their self-titled debut album of bluesy tunes that even on first listen, sound as if you've just wandered into a local pub to hear a great rock band over a beer. Thanks to the Top Ten hit "Sultans of Swing," Dire Straits was a major success in both Britain and America, with the single and album climbing into the Top Ten on both sides of the Atlantic.   COMMUNIQUE On their 1979 sophomore release Communique, Dire Straits continue to refine their pub-rock aesthetic with an unpretentious set of melancholy rock tunes. Mark Knopfler's penchant for cynical characters is further developed on tracks like "Where Do You Think You're Going" and "News," while the presence of Jerry Wexler at the production helm ensures that the rest of the band keeps the rhythms extra tight.   MAKING MOVIES Dire Straits' third release, 1980's Making Movies, features several epic cuts that stand among Mark Knopfler's finest work. On Making Movies, Dire Straits began to move away from its roots rock origins into a jazzier variation of country-rock and singer/songwriter folk-rock storytelling. Featuring "Romeo and Juliet," "Tunnel of Love," and "Skateaway."   DIRE STRAITS EP   ALL SONGS BY  MARK KOOPLER.   BROTHERS IN ARMS Dire Straits' biggest selling album? In fact, one of the biggest selling albums worldwide of all time, 1985's Brothers In Arms, helped musically define a decade. A sophisticated rock masterpiece, it reached #1, stayed there nine weeks, and is nine times platinum. Contains "Money For Nothing," the song that helped immortalize the phrase "I want my MTV", hit #1, and won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance.
