Label/Format: Fontana - original matt black and silver format that have rough textured surfaces. Side one has the embossed ‘C/T’ tax codes which are pristine perfect. So black and totally unworn infact, they are not that easy to even see. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in breathtaking, jaw-drop conditions. Just recently I sold a 1964 copy of The Roulettes ‘Stakes & Chips’ in close to Mint condition. This legendary jazz album dates back to 1961 and in mono too. It also is in immaculate condition and plays to absolute perfection from start to finish. Both labels so clean and fresh looking, they could have been manufactured yesterday. Fresh, clean and in time, age and mode defying conditions. Side one has just ONE faint and small spindle mark and side two just a couple.These are the only tiny, minor blemishes on a pair labels that could almost pass as new. All evidence suggest a once-played record reitterated by in-the-room sound quality. These labels look barely even handled and both truly, will remind those around at the time what new labels once looked-like. Reference standard, I doubt if this record has seen light-of-day for decades and its fast approaching 50! I had to take pictures of these instead of my usual high-resolution scan because the reflective mode of my scanner reflects off silver ink and the detail goes, but I can assure any interested collector, this pair of labels are likely to never be found better than these – stunning.

Cat Number: TFL 5149.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: A mighty impressive 166 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Very Rare indeed and one of the rarest albums I have ever offered on Ebay. Seldom seen or offered and you could search the world over and not find a better original mono copy than this. A record time has forgotten, as did the only owner I guess. Even the flimsy unlined paper inner is like brand new and the cover only a blemish short (a couple of faint creases and small laminate lift), that apart it’s almost as new. The record is practically unmarked in terms of scratches, scuffs, hairlines or stylus use. Under angled light faint polylining storage blemishes can be seen on the surface, the owner put this inside a softer protective inner. It appears it’s been there for a considerable number of years undisturbed. Only just seen on side two and with NO audible effect whatsoever, it’s very light anyway and possibly nit-picking even mentioning. This incredible landmark album plays perfectly with as close to nothing unwanted as can realistically be possible, even from a brand new record. This is arguably the rarest album the man ever made and the four albums listed in the guides have huge values. This is serious jazz connoisseur territory and the musical birth of a new super-talent of the genre. Few originals sold, even fewer in mono will survive this museum quality condition. A record made and issued from way back and stored with the utmost care and barely even played. Many serious listeners cherished their records enough to put them direct to tape and then leave them well alone – either that or it was to the purchaser’s taste. This album in this condition goes beyond ‘rare’.

Brief Info: I do not offer jazz albums often, so when I do so, I try to make them extra special and this legendary debut album from one of the greatest British saxophonists is beyond extra special. Recorded and issued in 1961, Morrissey followed in the wake of the legend that was Tubby Hayes. Three Dick Morrissey Quartet albums were issued and this is the oldest and rarest. The Quartet played bop with an edge, it’s magnificent and superbly recorded. This barely played mono record sounds stunning, just like new and with in-the-room high fidelity sound that defies its vintage. An immensely talented tenor sax player, the young Morrissey actually resembles a young Pete Townshend on the cover (please see close-up). I have taken some other close-up pictures too just to show the quality of this incredibly well preserved cover, the back and spine look brand new. Clearly of considerable historical importance within the world of jazz, this will grace any serious collector’s collection. A truly stunning piece of work in the most incredible of conditions. Connoisseur quality, do not lose this incredibly rare opportunity.

Cover Grade and Format: Practically Mint(-), a single format with front lamination. The back retains its original shop price of 16/- written neatly in felt-tip (please see close-up of this detail). The laminate wraps around the three closed edges on to three external rear flipbacks. The forward text on the back is by Benny Green. This is the mono cover with the correct TFL catalogue number. Printed and made in England with no credits.

Lamination & Front: Beautiful and with any blemishes being tiny, two corner area semi-creases with a lift round them, one of the creases small, both fine. Little else to really fault, but for the discerning, the orange area edge on the right has darked on the laminate end and there are a tiny few ultra faint surface marks only visible with critical viewing under angled light. It’s almost an insult to mention these minor blemishes on a cover fast approaching 50. This is beautiful and is in age-defying condition. The laminate ultra fresh, clear and with superb rich shine. Three mild lifts, one moderate, one very small, one tiny, all near the top left corner, those apart all other fully adhered. The semi-creases mentioned, but no others of note, even devoid of those fine edge types, simply incredible. Even under light, no friction rubs or dulling or record impression. Remember too, the weight of the record which is very heavy and thick. A legendary cover, very rare and looking fantastic.

Cover Back: If the front is exceptional, the back can only be described as incredible. I think I will make this easy and not long-winded: it’s as perfect as any cover gets and looks brand new. Just two shop written things, again my close-up shows them. 16/-, the original price (80 pence in modern currency) and the numbers 120 in blue biro, possibly the shop’s ID or reference stock number of this record. Both written very neatly indeed. Truly this back has to be seen for real to be believed and fully appreciated.

Top Edge: Unworn, laminated and straight.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering, this made with thick card. This working edge where the record enters is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Mint as made: Solid, straight, uncompressed and square. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. This has darkened or aged one iota. My fingertip test on all edges revealed not one scuff or crack to the laminate at all.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs, probably present from new, all retain superb pointed shape.

Cover Summary: An amazing all round example of this very rare early 60’s cover, one that will prove close to impossible to match or find better, even with the minor creases on the corner of the front. Just imagine what most will look like these days, that is indeed if you find another. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner: Inside this cover was the flimsy unlined plain white inner. It looks unused, the LP was stored inside a polylined replacement as mentioned above. This inner is little short of Mint with no tears, noteworthy creases or edge splits. Still as white as manufacture day - incredible.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: I am not taking into account of any mild inner blemishes that have No effect on sound whatsoever and are mild and faint anyway. Simply grading on stylus marks and handling use, I have no hesitation in grading this sublime record as Mint(-). A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very heavily pressed. A copy probably only played a couple of times including my play-grade. There is barely a stylus mark to be seen and just one ultra faint surface scuff trace was hardly visible. A superb record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This outstanding piece of British jazz history plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is immesely high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A super-fidelity recording from the annals of jazz, the quartet sounded in my room. Barely a trace of surface sound was noticed, just a mere couple of ultra faint ticks just about reached my ears but this is being ultra critical being so faint. This mono record was not really designed to be played on high-end stereo equipment but this simply excels. Mono was the sound of its generation and for many connoisseurs of the genre, it’s how it should be heard and it will rarely, if ever be experienced better than this. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove near impossible to find better and and is unreservedly recommended. A stunning listen from the golden era of quality jazz - a priceless piece and a likely one-off opportunity.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
