Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour

The fifth album from French songstress Fabienne Delsol, Indigo Red finds her on familiar, if rather wonderful, territory. Influenced by quirky 60s pop, garage rock and indie music, her songwriting blends nostalgia, effortless cool and a sense of danger lurking just beneath the surface. A mix of original compositions and covers (including songs by Silver Apples, Sharon Tandy and Francoise Hardy, amongst others), Delsol's first album since 2019 is a welcome return. The mash-up of psych and pop that is 'She Is Gone' sets out Delsol's raison d'etre. A classic slice of quirk-pop, complete with a backwards guitar solo and a chorus that practically insists the bubble lamp be switched on. There's a certain 60s vibe to her sound, but it's plucked from the point at which the hippie dream was starting to turn sour. It's not unlike when Vanessa Paradis and Lenny Kravitz discovered The Velvet Underground. Her cover of 'I Heard About A Friend', originally recorded by 70s prog band Goliath, finds her pleading, "look after your mind, until you find out who you really are". It's a beautiful reworking that Delsol floods with pathos and a sharp pop sensibility. It's an approach that runs throughout Indigo Red, giving the album an understated charm that's difficult to resist.
