Description

This discovery is real treasure for all the worldwide collectors of Deep Purple's history and amazing UK psych records generally. The original studio test pressing of:

EPISODE SIX: Lucky Sunday/Mr Universe (UK Regent Sound White Label DEMO 1968)

This, of course, was the band that featured both Ian Gillan and Roger Glover and this record captiures them at the moment before they split to form the mighty Deep Purple just months later.

Indeed the B-Side on this "Mr Universe" - written by Gillan/Glover - could justifiably be said to be the first true sound of the coming group.

Mr Universe is a HUGE psych noise no matter what future rock legends are involved. Gillan's instantly recognisable vocal underpinned by those oh-so-psychedlic warped back ups. The twisted wild guitar snakes through it all eventually bursting into that screeching solo. The band builds and builds until Ian's screaming freak out at the end. Whoa!

This was obviously the song that told Ian and Roger they had to rip it up and start again. Like this.

And this copy may be the only one like it in the world.

The eventually released version on Chapter One Records is notoriously super scarce - but this is the actual studio test pressing complete with HAND-WRITTEN labels. Only band members would have seen and handled this one. And it has survived these forty years in just magnificent condition.

The vinyl is bright glossy and shiney. Both sides are completely free of any scratches, warp or scuffs, showing only the mildest short hairlines under harsh direct lighting. This is a very exciting item.

The industrial labels are plain white with just the word TEST in large bold letters and the company copyright terms in tiny script around the top.

There are two A's to the "Lucky Sunday" side as well as the title and band name written in red ink. This side also features the release date "25 Oc 1968" hand written in blue ink.

The reverse - the incredible "Mr Universe"  - is written on in a completely different amazing hand writing in black ink. Somebody was obviously very proud of this side and quite right too. What a magnificent sound this is.

The record is STILL in it's original and wonderfully rare not-for-release 1968 studio sleeve.

It states: "REGENT SOUND LTD. 4 Denmark Street, Charing Cross Road London WC2" Followed by the phone numbers and then the words "DISC CUTTING".

All serious Deep Purple collectors will know exactly what a gloriously rare and major disc this is. It is highly, highly unlikely another original DEMO copy of this key track in Purple's history will ever come onto the market again.

Equally UK Psych lovers who truly know their stuff will want to tuck this one away among the greats they already own.

Whatever - somebodies collection is about to get that much more fantastic and valuable. Because they will have...

EPISODE SIX: Lucky Sunday/Mr Universe (UK Regent Sound White Label DEMO 1968)

Good luck to you all.

There is no reserve on this monster and the start is low.
