Deep Purple

'Stormbringer'

Warner Brothers, USA, 1975

PR4 2832

THE ALBUM that effectively finished off the classic Mrk III version of Purple bringing Blackmore into conflict over the musical direction and spurring him on to form Rainbow. Critiscised at the time for sounding far too funky, time and distance has in cat been kind to the contents. Displaying a brilliant fusion of rock and soul the tracks are wonderfully expressive and display both Coverdale and Hughes in brilliant light, the two sparring on some of the bands most soulful material. Tracks like 'Stormbinger' and 'Lady Double Dealer' and 'High Ball Shooter' however, are about as hard rock as they've always been - indeed, those particular tracks could've easily been recorded for the triumphant 'Burn' album.

Elsewhere the standard is equally high with a nice mellange of firm but funky hard rock, even Blackmore seems to be inspired on a number of tracks firing off a number of excellent trademark solo's. Best track? In my book that might have to be 'Soldier Of Fortune', the natural successor to 'Mistreated' giving Coverdale the opportunity to impress and claim ownership of one of the greatest brands in hard rock.

This is the extremely rare US Quadrophonic issue, released in the US only for a microsecond before being deleated due to lack of sales - the Quad system was highly touted but failed to generate much excitement amongst consumers content with stereo reproduction. The mixes, however, are different and unique - hence the rarity.

Pressing: Warner Brothers, USA, 1975

Vinyl: Superb clean condition. Very little signs of use. Numerous entirely non audible tiny scuffs only visible under a bright light -primarilly due to sliding in and out of the inner sleeve and a slightly mottled effect left over from the stamping plate release agent - most US pressings display this finish when viewed under a bright light. Does not affect playback whatsoever. Grades as a visual and audio near perfect MINT-!

Cover: Again, virtually no signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated sigle sleeve cover. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is perfect - straight and stiff. Saw cut top left. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 39 years after release. Grades as an extremely strong MINT-!

Inserts: None
