DEEP PURPLE "Made In Japan" 1972 UK PURPLE 1st PRESSING
DECCA CONTRACT PRESSING, A1/B1/A1/B1, Nr MINT AUDIO

DEEP PURPLE
Made In Japan

HERE WE HAVE AN EXCELLENT, UK PURPLE RECORDS (TPSP 351) FIRST PRESSING (December 1972) OF DEEP PURPLE'S TREMENDOUS DOUBLE LP LIVE SET, "Made In Japan"

FANTASTICALLY ATMOSPHERIC LIVE ALBUM WITH A STUNNING CRYSTAL CLEAR, POWERFUL LOUD CUT - SOUNDS ABSOLUTELY SENSATIONAL

NOTE: I BELIEVE THIS COPY TO BE A DECCA CONTRACT PRESSING - FOR SEVERAL REASONS - THE LABELS HAVE THE DECCA CHARACTERISTIC GROOVE (not present on the EMI labels - clearly visible in the photos), THE RUN-OFFS HAVE NO STAMPER NUMBERS (always present on EMI presses) - JUST 3/3/3/3 MOTHERS AND THE LABELS DO NOT CARRY THE EMI "MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN' TEXT AT THE 6 O'CLOCK POSITION (again, always present on EMI presses). As I am sure you are aware, EMI contracted out pressing when demand at their Hayes pressing plant exceeded supply (to either Decca or Pye). Both Pye and Decca omit the stampers but only Decca has the grooved labels. I AM THEREFORE LED TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THIS IS, IN FACT, A (previously undocumented) DECCA CONTRACT PRESSING FOR EMI AND AS SUCH IS A VERY INTERESTING FIRST PRESS VARIANT

THE PURPLE COMPANY LABELS CARRY USUAL FIRST ISSUE "THE GRAMOPHONE CO LTD." RIM TEXT (later changed to "EMI RECORDS") AND THE FIRST PRESSING MATRIX:
TPS 3511 A-1U (etched "PORKY")
TPS 3511 B-1U (etched "DELTA PORK")
TPS 3512 A-1U (etched "PECKO")
TPS 3512 B-1U (etched "PECKIE")

AND THE TWO LPs ARE HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL, OUTER LAMINATED GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd." DATE CODED 7211 (1972, November)

Recorded over three nights in August 1972, Deep Purple's Made in Japan was the record that brought the band to headliner status in the U.S. and elsewhere, and it remains a landmark in the history of heavy metal music. Since reorganizing with singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover in 1969, Deep Purple had recorded three important albums — Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, and Machine Head — and used the material to build a fierce live show. Made in Japan, its selections drawn from those albums, documented that show, in which songs were drawn out to ten and even nearly 20 minutes with no less intensity, as guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and organist Jon Lord soloed extensively and Gillan sang in a screech that became the envy of all metal bands to follow. The signature song, of course, was "Smoke on the Water," with its memorable riff, which went on to become an American hit single. But those extended workouts, particularly the moody "Child in Time," with Gillan's haunting falsetto wail and Blackmore's amazingly fast playing, and "Space Truckin'," with Lord's organ effects, maintained the onslaught, making this a definitive treatment of the band's catalog and its most impressive album.

Track Listing:
Side 1: HIGHWAY STAR / CHILD IN TIME
Side 2: SMOKE ON THE WATER / THE MULE
Side 3: STRANGE KIND OF WOMAN / LAZY
Side 4: SPACE TRUCKIN'

LABELS: All the labels are CLEAN, BRIGHT with moderate spindle traces only really evident when angled under a bright light and some light age related but minor foxing spots on the Record Two labels (please see photographs). Visually EXCELLENT
VINYL Visual: The surfaces retain their original DEEP, GLOSSY sheen. There are some superficial light marks but these have NO audio consequence - Both records plays BEAUTIFULLY throughout. Visually EXCELLENT
VINYL Audio: The audio is absolutely OUTSTANDING - CRYSTAL CLEAR, VIBRANT, POWERFUL SOUND. TREMENDOUSLY ATMOSPHERIC. There are NO scratches, NO sticks, NO jumps, NO clicks/pops - even the many quiet passages (solos and intros) play as beautifully and as quietly as vinyl possibly can. The sound quality is OUTSTANDINGLY STRONG and both records play to an impressively high standard with NO groove-wear and NO distortion. The set must be critically graded NEAR MINT for audio - SOUNDS SUPERB - the playback is pretty much FLAWLESS. NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use STRICT RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'About Me' page)
SLEEVE: The gatefold sleeve is in EXCELLENT condition. The outer laminated surfaces have a beautiful DEEP GLOSS with very little rubbing and only light record impression and the unlaminated inside is CLEAN, BEAUTIFULLY BRIGHT and FRESH. The top and bottom edges have NO storage wear and the spine displays all text CLEAR and BOLD with just some light creasing. Beautifully preserved example of this easily worn sleeve
