Brief Artist & Album Info: Hardly an album that needs much introduction, it’s simply one of the most famous and best of the ‘popular’ heavy rock albums of the early 1970s. All seven tracks included will be known to most collectors and of course includes the classic ‘Smoke on the Water’ with arguably the most famous rock guitar riff ever recorded. This evergreen track is based on the infamous burning down of a Swiss venue where Frank Zappa and the Mothers were playing at the time. Also featuring the most famous and best ever Deep Purple line-up and arguably their best ever studio album – Machine Head is a true classic in the true sense of the word. This an impressive very early copy, however it does have a few brief clicks near the beginning of ‘Lazy’, but little else overall, so this one not for perfectionists. But few originals will not have the odd light blemish as this was such a popular album, and so many were played to near destruction. Get this on to your deck and rock the night away – dah, dah, dahhh – dah dah dah-dahhh – dah dah dah-dah-dahhh.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. A gatefold format, laminated front and back, the inside is matt and smooth. The laminate ends inside on the bottom edges making it very prone to sticking and tearing which this has totally avoided, and that is unusual. Printed and made in Great Britain by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. This includes the EMI white inner sleeve with its ‘PATENT Nos. 1,125,555’ text and the large two-fold lyric insert sheet.

Lamination – Front and Back: Both sides retain fine shine and clarity with any dulling mild seen under light. Faint wispy surface mark seen under light, but the lack of lifting, one tiny spot trace near the top right front corner, and little creasing are considerable pluses. The front bottom right corner tip has a small crease and a light rim impression on the very bottom of the back, again both seldom avoided. Overall, both surfaces just give that polite feeling of age but remain attractive as-seen.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A couple of tiny lower tip rubs, the odd tiny adhesive trace purely in manufacture near the top corners, this totally natural. The lack of pulling to the inside laminate ends is rarely seen.

Top & Bottom Edges: No wear, very smooth and straight, all retain full laminate cover and are parallel and close to flat when closed. They rarely get better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real edge which is tucked inside, this is unworn, quite straight and smooth. The back entrances are clean and again sharp. Any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on, these are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A very nice spine that unusually retains fully laminate which is hardly cracked with barely a trace of peeling. This is seldom seen either as the inside fold hinge is high, meaning this will in most cases form a central recess from opening, meaning the text will sink. But this has been almost avoided, so the unworn text is easily read as-seen. Very solid, straight with minimal natural compression. Folded square so the edges sit neatly together and parallel. These details mean the difference between average and somewhat above.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and light, with the odd small tip crease, very to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong and generally pleasing example of this famous 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find a great deal better. It should please many collectors.

The Lyric Insert: NEAR EXCELLENT: a large double-fold lyric sheet printed on one side only. This has a couple of mild creaes and one very small edge split on the top fold right. The back clean and unmounted, the front also clean and still fresh.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white unlined inner with EMI Patent text. Lightly aged with slight grubbiness and a few tone spots. Minimal creasing and all edges intact with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. Wide grooves for ultimate sound quality, this takes the stylus near the labels, especially on side two. This is not an exceptionally long album which means the grooves are wider than most and the entire diameter of the record is fully utilised for maximum hi-fi sound. Any surface marks are mostly very fine and light, a tiny stylus mark at the beginning of ‘Lazy’ emits a few brief clicks as mentioned already above, but not a great else, so not for the purists, but many will enjoy this one.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: What is usually overlooked in descriptions, is just how brilliantly this album is recorded – the groove width rarely lies and this original carries incredible information and detail. This rock classic plays mostly above it’s visual grading with little to fault bar those few brief clicks, around eight or nine. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very impressive with a wide dynamic range and full-on sound with great dynamics. I still feel first issues offer the finest and most consistent sound available, and overall, this failed to disappoint, it’s smooth and warm and makes any worthy system excel. Minimal surface sound, this offers real power, richness and depth and most importantly, that classic heavy vinyl sound that rock music demands. This super detailed recording has real clout, pace and rhythm and no other format really compares to the analogue vinyl experience, even with a few blemishes, this was a captivating and thrilling play-grade. Both channels are clean and sharp with no tracking issues*. Modestly played I feel sure, little of any note spoilt spoilt the listening experience bar those brief, fairly mild clicks. It could prove difficult to find considerbly better as a first issue and merits high recommendation for many, but not quite for purists who only want ‘perfection’ at any cost.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
