Label/Format: Harvest – Yellow and green format. This ‘first pressed’ format copy has no EMI logo and includes the ‘GRAMOPHONE CO LTD’ text on the rims. Later pressings included the small boxed EMI logo and the text was changed to EMI Co Ltd. (please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks on the lighter side of moderate on side two and only light on one. These are mainly fine and have low visibility. Just a few more than I normally offer but have no fears, this fantastic record plays beautifully with very impressive sound. The plain fact-of-the-matter is, some owners used the label as a guide to locate the spindle and often have little bearing on the number of actual plays of which I am certain, this has very few.

Cat Number: SHVL 777.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. This little above average – later repressings were mostly considerably lighter.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The earliest pressed ‘pre-EMI’ copies are scarcer and are less easy to find compared to the later repressings which are relatively common. This was a late pre-EMI issue and was not available for very long before the box logo was included, that said, it sold quite well. This is a lovely copy and even includes a superb Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably Deep Purple’s finest and most treasured album, their fourth and the one that really won them ‘mass’ appeal after a patchy start with the band performing cover versions and really going nowhere very fast in commercial terms. A new vocalist was introduced – Ian Gillan – and now performing their own material, a new ‘supergroup’ was born. An album of hard-edged riffs and vocals of the highest calibre – few singers could even live with the power behind him – but this new formula worked perfectly. ‘In Rock’ quickly became one of the heavy rock classics of all-time and this contains several of the band’s finest anthems including the awesome ‘Child in Time’ and ‘Speed King’. My favourite song here however is the lesser mentioned final song, ‘Hard Lovin’ Man’ that simply drives and flows from the speakers with channel-to-channel pyrotechnics with speed – a real classic. Special mention here to for Lord’s superb keyboards, his recent death would have saddened fans and most rock fans. Keyboard players within heavy bands often do not get the praise they should – this man was VERY special indeed and helped give Deep Purple their special sound. This album sold well, and peaking at 4 in the UK (but only a lowly 143 in the US) it has to be one of the very best issued on this famous progressive label. Often seen, but most being later pressings as popularity grew, the pre-EMI pressed originals are more elusive and this is a lovely example that offers an attractive, little-worn cover, inner and very clean sound.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format, laminated front and back, the inside matt finished and smooth. On this one, the laminate ends inside on the bottom edges as the earliest ones did – some omit this detail and are tucked inside. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Included is the Harvest promotional inner that is very impressive.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a very fine shine, freshness and clarity. It has no lifting and few marks or creases. A couple of thumb creases on the back near the left edge show little, any others, very few, fine and faint. With normal front on viewing, this shows little at all – under angled light, a little mild dulling is seen on the back around the rim, but in terms of this largely unavoidable blemishing, it is very light. A cover that has more than withstood the test-of-time and looks very impressive overall.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Clean with little to fault. A small tone spot on the bottom of the fold hinge, any handling marks on the dark surfaces light and faint.

Top & Bottom Edges: A tiny rub or chip trace on the top but little else. Mininal burr traces to the inside card ends.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with again little hint of any wear, thickening or burring. Both ends open, the front unstuck which I decided to leave alone as it is so neat.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with just a couple of very small laminate chips or small peel – I am talking very small indeed and this is a very neat spine. A little natural compression from opening so the text is very slightly sunken near the bottom – that pretty normal on such a fold construction and few can ever avoid it. In fact many of these shed all their laminate freely, but as stated this is very close to fully intact. There is no wear to the fully protected text.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is small as is any tip creasing. Very fine shape to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine example of this very famous rock cover, this does it very fine justice and will please many, if not most collectors.

The Harvest Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): very impressive indeed and the only hint of ageing due to the usual darkening of the seam adhesive, which in this case is only mild. Unlike many, the retains it’s polylining and hardly any creasing at all. Clean with a high degree of freshness and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): an impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks few, ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light, I feel sure this has been only modestly played and with due care on a quality record player. Again, this should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This impressive original pre-EMI record plays even above it’s visual grading with practically nothing to fault. An album that does have some very quiet passages but this plays very well indeed. All fans will know the intro to ‘Child in Time’ is gentle, so absolute silence is a big ask, but this has little to fault. Now over 42 years old, few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish at very best. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The stereo imagery is fantastic especially on the final track. No pops or significant clicks were noted and this gives an impressive account of itself, I consider this a fairly challenging album and few early examples will better this significantly. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this hard rock classic. Finding a better all-round example will not prove easy and this merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
