Label/Format: Harvest – Yellow and green format, that has the original ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ text on the label rims. Later pressings had this changed to the EMI text.

Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with only a small few spindle marks, reasonably fine but a couple more moderate so they show a little more but mostly under angled light. This another superb record from the same collection as the ‘Machine Head’ and ‘In Rock’ I am currently offering.

Cat Number: SHVL 793.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A very good solid weight for this one anbd above average even for a first issue.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, but a complete, early issue copy that plays beautifully are less easy. record offers terrific audio quality with all the detail and clarity you would want and expect from an earlier pressing and the very wear-prone cover really impressive too.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The second of four absolute classics this legendary heavy band made and their final one for Harvest. Following the magnificent high standards of In Rock (also on offer) this was never going to be easy, but Fireball does just that. Some with less volume and refined, but still some wonderful rockers – none better than the stunning ‘The Mule’, with it’s phenominal drumming from Paice. This excellent set was a great prelude to the classics Machine Head (also on offer) and the blistering double live set Made in Japan. Featuring their undisputed classic line-up of Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord and Paice this is one of the band’s most treasured albums and beautifully packaged too. This one complete with a little wear, and terrific clean sound too.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: this being quite critical on a hugely uncompromising format, arguably worthy of a (+). An unlaminated gatefold with ALL surfaces finely textured, not only that, the card is quite soft and delicate and it simply does not wear well (to say the least). The black finish making it near impossible to find devoid of some wear. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. The lyric insert and Harvest inner are also included.

Cover Front: With the famous band picture depicting a comet, the tail being the album name, this graphic is in stunning condition as hopefully can be seen on my main picture close-up. The front has barely any rubbing at all and no speckle either (that is whitening of the raised areas), I have rarely seen this cover better. Clean, very fresh and hugely attractive with very little rubbing or creasing at all. Just a little on the corner tips that few, if any will ever avoid as a bare minimum.

Cover Back: The back is even more prone to wear as the record will press into it causing ring wear in most cases. Here, almost incredibly, it has been avoided, and barely even a trace of rim impression either. The odd small and faint edge crease but little else to fault with even corner tip rubbing few and light.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Really impressive again, little to fault again, the odd ultra faint edge rub being very critical.

Top Edges: Both straight with any rubbing ultra fine and faint, these are rarely seen like this.

Bottom Edges: A little mainly light patchy surface rubbing, the back right corner area (approx 1 inch) has more moderate rubbing. These traditional storage edges again will rarely escape totally and these in context have faired well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, largely sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring only mild and gentle as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid with the thicker format making it even more prone to wear. Still straight with minimal compression and folded square with the edges meeting up flush and close to parallel. A very slight tilt to right being critical. This has the red text, also prone to fading, but here strong and barely worn, the odd minor clip from a natural fine crease from opening and any wear to the predominately black surface very tiny and little. Even the folds retain their ink and have also avoided rubbing or scuffs. All said on the unforgiving spine, this also has faired incredibly well, like the others from this small lot, this was cover protected.

Corners: Mainly light tip rubs, more moderate on the bottom right with fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: Another one of rock’s most prized and famous covers and this one does it very high justice. Soft black, textured gatefolds with heavy records inside for over 40 years have little chance of surviving in very fine conditions these days – but with some care, they can – the proof being seen here. Finding this classic harvest sleeve much better will prove very difficult and this should please many, if not most collectors.

The Harvest Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: only marked down for creasing on one top corner on the reverse side. That apart, little to fault and very modestly aged. It retains it’s lining and has a little of the usual seam adhesive browning most acquire. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Insert: PRACTICALLY MINT: again, often missing. This simply looks as clean and fresh as when made with no creasing or marks, rarely, if ever seen a better one.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): this quite critically graded with little to fault bar a light surface mark each side, both have NO SOUND whatsoever and this record plays with superb clean sound. Both surfaces ver clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any other surface traces ultra fine and faint indeed and there are NO penetrating scratches at all. This should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This heavy rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very rich sound. Barely even a hint of any surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted. Some incredible detail and the percussion on ‘The Mule’ takes the breath away. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this early-pressed example that gave a truly great account of itself. Ultimate detail and sonic delivery, nothing beats a first issue and this is very well pressed with no inherent cutting or pressing noises. This copy will prove difficult to find better for sound and it looks very nice too. This really packs a punch and this heavyweight copy pleased me immensely on play-grade and for quality, enjoyable and detailed sound, this is strongly recommended – with a lovely clean cover and insert, this package will take some beating.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
