Industrial innovators Death in June emerged in 1980 from the remnants of the punk unit Crisis, reuniting singer/multi-instrumentalist Douglas Pearce and bassist Tony Wakeford; drummer Patrick Leagas completed the original lineup, which made its live debut late the following year with an opening slot for the Birthday Party. The 12-inch "Heaven Street" soon followed, and in 1983 Death in June issued their first full-length effort, The Guilty Have No Pride; from the outset, the group was criticized for its adoption of fascist imagery, and charges of Nazism dogged Pearce throughout his career. Upon completing the Burial LP, Wakeford left the lineup to form Sol Invictus; following the release of 1985's Nada!, only Pearce remained, with Leagas exiting to form his own project, Sixth Comm. Beginning with the 1986 double album The World That Summer, Pearce continued Death in June primarily as a solo concern, aided by a revolving group of collaborators including Current 93's David Tibet, Boyd Rice and Coil's John Balance; the abrasive electronics and martial rhythms of early efforts gave way to an increasingly expansive sonic approach over the course of subsequent outings including 1987's Brown Book, 1989's The Wall of Sacrifice and 1992's But, What Ends When the Symbols Shatter?, the latter evoking Pearce's longstanding interest in traditional European folk music. The first British act to perform in Croatia following the outbreak of Yugoslavia's civil war, Death in June documented their experiences on 1993's Something Is Coming; subsequent efforts include 1995's Rose Clouds of Holocaust, 1997's Take Care and Control and 2000's Operation Hummingbird.

With a glut of industrial-pop hybrids on the market in the 1980s and '90s, several bands stayed true to the experimental nature of early industrial music. The Psychic TV axis alone spawned many creative artists, including Current 93's David Tibet, who blends Gothic chanting and haunting atmospherics with industrial noisescapes courtesy of tape loops and synthesizers. Though Tibet doesn't quite have bandmates, he frequently works with a core of collaborators including ex-Psychic TV compatriot John Balance (more famous for his work with Peter Christopherson in Coil); Fritz Haaman, formerly of 23 Skidoo (like PTV an offshoot of the most influential of the early industrial acts, Throbbing Gristle); Steven Stapleton of Nurse with Wound fame; Rose McDowall of Strawberry Switchblade; and Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, also a former member of Psychic TV. Steven Stapleton is probably the most frequent member, appearing on virtually all Current 93 releases — a favor which David Tibet returns by working with Stapleton on most projects by Nurse with Wound.

The trio of Tibet, Balance, and Haaman debuted in 1983 by recording the single "Lashtah" for Laylah Records. Until the end of the '80s, Tibet — utilizing the various lineups — recorded at a frenetic pace, issuing more than two albums per year for both Laylah and the Maldoror label. By the '90s, Tibet's output and style changed slightly: his productivity slowed somewhat, and the sound grew more subdued, encompassing acoustic folk in its most sinister permutations. Productivity picked up in the 2000s with more Current 93 material being recorded and reissued. Tibet also designed a bottle label for the Absinthe liquor company in 2005. 2006 saw the release of both Black Ships Ate the Sky and Sleep Has His House on Durtro Records, followed by Inmost Light in April 2007.

IN THE NURSERY

Formed in Sheffield, England by brothers Klive and Nigel Humberstone in 1981, In the Nursery explored a strange fusion of industrialized military rhythms and classical and film soundtrack music. Devoted more to the former in their early years, the band debuted in 1983 with the mini-album When Cherished Dreams Come True, also contributing to several compilations over the next two years. After the 1985 Temper EP, the group's initial lineup had evaporated, leaving only the Humberstone brothers to record their first full-length effort, 1986's Twins, which began to explore classical influences in greater depth. Percussionist Q and French bilingual vocalist Dolores Marguerite C were added for 1987's Stormhorse, which was intended to resemble the soundtrack to an imaginary film. 1988's Koda continued in this vein; in 1989, Wax Trax! released a compilation of the band's early work entitled Counterpoint. In 1990, In the Nursery altered its approach somewhat for the more graceful, refined L'Esprit, on which C's vocals played a prominent role for the first time. Sense (1991) and Duality (1992) were the group's most film soundtrack-like albums yet, and that direction finally culminated in an official soundtrack, 1993's An Ambush of Ghosts. The 1994 concept album Anatomy of a Poet followed, along with several collaborative projects under the alias Les Jumeaux. Scatter, an extensive retrospective, was released on the band's own ITN Corporation label in 1995; meanwhile, the track "White Robe" was licensed by Warner Bros. for Interview with the Vampire, and the single "Hallucinations?" appeared in several different films. From 1996-97, the group's soundtrack work has expanded, with contributions to the television series La Femme Nikita and a new score for the silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari; there have also been several more releases under the Les Jumeaux moniker. The year 2000 saw the issue of Hindle Wakes, a soundtrack to film based on a Stanley Houghton play.
