VOLUME TWO More than a nostalgia trip: more like opening an old suitcase and finding bars of gold. A real treasure if you remember San Francisco during the Summer of Love, the proverbial "good ol' days," or just want to recapture the vibes. Disc jockey Tom Donahue from the first FM radio station in the USA is a nice addition to the tracks. Tom does on air promos for 1960s concerts at the Family Dog in San Francisco, the then new Youngbloods album, and a benefit for the Free Clinic in Haight Asbury.

I cannot stop playing this CD. I had forgotten the great songs by the Youngbloods, Byrds, and Donovan. Moreover, besides those gems you get the 11-minute version of Time by the Chambers Brothers. Wow. The Brothers are psychedelisized. This CD is worth the price just for that track, but that doesn't mean the other tracks are substandard or not worth playing.

Tune in, turn on, drop out. Buy this CD. I guarantee you will be groovin' down Haight Street or in your mind. Peace and love.

P.S. There is a second volume with famous disc jockey B. Mitchell Reed. ALSO INCLUDED HERE

Mitchell Reed, who was one of the mainstays on KMET FM, as well as an extremely important mover and shaker in the city in its prime. Taken from shows of the 1968-1971 period, the CD showcases what FM radio was, as well as its necessity and artful production. Around fabulous (full-length) versions of FM staples by Love ("Alone Again Or"), Donovan Featuring the Jeff Beck Group ("Barabajagal"), and about a dozen other turntable hits, Reed keeps the flow going with smooth, hip, and very honest raps that capture the moment in tact and in real time. Commercials of the era (such as "The Hip Bagel") and news reports only add to the period charm and transport the listener to a very real evening of music and intelligent thought. Like Donahue, Reed started in AM radio, during its loud, fast, mile-a-minute Top 40 heyday. The metamorphosis that he and the audience were going through at the dawn of the 1970s is captured here in all of its glory, making this an exquisite social, spiritual, and political document, not to mention an artistic one as well.

Classic 1968 debut album features "Born To Be Wild" and "The Pusher"

Steppenwolf have become synonymous with their huge Harley ridin'-hit, "Born to be Wild", although in reality, their success was far broader, with sales totaling more than 25 million units worldwide. Now their eponymous debut album originally released in 1968 is back and stunning audiophiles — courtesy of Analogue Productions and Quality Record Pressings!

Their history is littered with a succession of band members, substance abuse issues and several break-ups and reformations, but Steppenwolf endures.
Steppenwolf started life in Canada in the early '60s as The Sparrows, but did not find fame until they had changed their name and released their rockin' album debut in 1968. When two tracks, "Born to be Wild" and "The Pusher", were used in the film "Easy Rider," the success of the album was assured. It marked the first of five consecutive gold certified albums but after the release of For Ladies Only in 1971, the band split.

They were back together by 1974 and started to release albums again, beginning with 1974's Slow Flux; but their heyday was past, and this album was to contain their last Top 40 hit, "Straight Shootin' Woman." They tried to split after 1975's Hour of the Wolf but contractual commitments to the record label made them stick it out for 1976's Skullduggery. Another split followed, and yet another reformation followed that. The band's last album of new material was Summerdaze released in 1997.

"Steppenwolf entered the studio for their recording debut with a lot of confidence -- based on a heavy rehearsal schedule before they ever got signed -- and it shows on this album, a surprisingly strong debut album from a tight hard rock outfit who was obviously searching for a hook to hang their sound on..."BTTOMorn to Be Wild" by ex-member Mars Bonfire, which became not only a chart-topping high-energy anthem for the counterculture (a status solidified by its use in Dennis Hopper's movie Easy Rider the following year), but coined the phrase heavy metal, thus giving a genre-specific name to the brand of music that the band played..." - Bruce Eder, allmusic

Mason's debut solo album remains his best effort, due to well crafted tracks like the hit "Only You Know & I know" and "Feelin' Alright," a song that has been covered by numerous artists, including Joe Cocker, and Three Dog Night. THE YOUNGBLOODS ELEPHANT MOUNTAIN 180 GRAM SEALED LIMITED EDITION RCA LSP4150 LP

The 1969 album, Elephant Mountain which was the magnetic third album by the Youngbloods, is commonly looked upon as the pinnacle of the legendary Bay Area combo's abundant eight-year career. From its spine-chilling opening track, the strains of a somber Appalachian fiddle permeating 'Darkness, Darkness' the listener is inexorably sucked into psychedelic quicksand by the haunting vocals of Jesse Colin Young, whose plaintive cry to 'hide the constant yearning for things that cannot be' proves mournfully irresistible. In addition to Young's songwriting masterpiece, it spotlights a sharp, country-rocking vocal duet 'Smug' by Young and recently-departed singer Jerry Corbitt, as well as the jazzy interplay between electric keyboard whiz Banana and the locked-in groove of drummer Joe Bauer during magical instrumental 'On Sir Francis Drake.

Expanded Edition Available on Vinyl for the First Time!
180g Audiophile Vinyl! Contains Material Previously Not on Vinyl!

Undead is a live album by Ten Years After, recorded live at the small jazz club, Klooks Kleek, in London on May 14th, 1968. The show combined Blues, Boogie and Jazz playing that merged more traditional Rock and Roll with 50s-style Jump Blues. Alvin Lee, Leo Lyons, Chick Churchill and Ric Lee together became one of the biggest club attractions in England. Their music knows no compromise - it's straight down the line. It's loud and tough - but honest. Undead captures the excitement and raw energy of the band's live performances.

When originally released in 1968, the album was only 38 minutes long, due to the timing constraints of vinyl. As the band's tunes were all pretty long, there were only five tracks on the original issue. The expanded edition of Undead contains 4 additional tracks of the performance and is available on vinyl for the very first time. The remastered audio is pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl and Side D is beautifully etched.

Spirit tempered its ravenous passion for jazz, high voltage rock, folk, blues and avant garde electronics, hammered it like a slab of hot steel and shaped a glistering original sound that no one’s ever been able to duplicate. It’s a good thing this eclectically brilliant Los Angeles combo--Jay Ferguson, Randy California, John Locke, Mark Andes and Ed "Cass" Cassidy--always cut more material than it could use on its albums. Enthusiastically endorsed by the four surviving members of Spirit (all of whom were interviewed for the liner notes), Now or Anywhere, emphasizes the moody and the ethereal, and smolders like phosphorous.

JEFFERSON AIRPLANE’S SURREALISTIC PILLOW SIMPLY VINYL 125 GRAM STEREO LONG OUT OF PRINT UK LIMITED EDITION,

Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - Rated 146/500!
Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - "White Rabbit" - Rated 483/500, "Somebody To Love" - Rated 279/500!

the second album for RCA, was recorded in San Francisco during 1967’s Summer of Love.

SURREALISTIC PILLOW is one of the finest examples of psychedelic rock releases of all time. Grace Slick, Marty Balin, Paul Kanter, Jorma Kaukonen, and Jack Casady, with a little help from Jerry Garcia, never made a more popular record. Songs like “White Rabbit” and “Somebody To Love” are still FM staples today.

When she joined the Jefferson Airplane in 1966 as replacement for original vocalist Signe Anderson, Grace Slick brought with her two songs she'd performed in her previous band, the Great Society: "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit."

Featured on this classic 1967 album, they became Top 10 hits, and helped establish both the San Francisco and the emerging counterculture they celebrated. With Jorma Kaukonen's sinewy guitar, Jack Casady's probing bass, and Spencer Dryden's inventive drumming swirling around Slick and co-vocalists Marty Balin and Paul Kantner on songs like "She Has Funny Cars" and "3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds," Surrealistic Pillow virtually defined the communal spirit of Summer of Love hippiedom.

Selections:
Side A:

1. She Has Funny Cars
2. Somebody To Love
3. My Best Friend
4. Today
5. Comin' Back To Me

2. D.C.B.A.

Four of the five original Byrds were aboard for this folk-rock landmark. Within months of its release in the summer of 1967, David Crosby would move on and the group would enter a permanent period of flux. Younger Than Yesterday, however, finds songwriters Crosby, Roger McGuinn, and Chris Hillman prodding one another with varied but complementary triumphs. "My Back Pages" is one of their best Dylan covers (and the Byrds had plenty of them), while "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star" (written as a jab at the Monkees) represents two minutes of compressed pop cynicism that's as valid today as it was when it hit the airwaves.

1967 was a vintage year for pop music and this album, one of the finest Byrds albums, reinforces my belief about just how much great music was released in that year, although all the tracks were actually recorded in 1966.. It was not especially successful at the time of its release, failing to make the top twenty of the American album charts, but it has aged well and may be better appreciated now than in 1967.

The album is notable for the emergence of Chris Hillman as a songwriter as well as great songs written or co-written by Roger McGuinn and David Crosby. The other notable feature is that this was the last album before the group went through a period of high staff turnover. Four of the original five were together for this album, the only absentee being Gene Clark. David Crosby was to depart during the recording of the next album after this and others followed later.

The album opens with So you want to be a rock'n'roll star (about the Monkees, whose music has stood the test of time, confounding their critics) - this song was a top thirty hit in America. It was the only hit although another single (Have you seen her) was released, which is probably why the album was not originally very successful.

Bob Dylan only contributed one song (My back pages). The other songs were all written or co-written by members of the Byrds. Of the remaining songs, I particularly like Everybody's been burned, Renaissance fair, but this is a great album from start to finish.

If you enjoy their music enough to want more than just a hits collection, this is a good place to start collecting their original albums.

Tracks include:  Thoughts And Words - Mind Gardens - My Back Pages - The Girl With No Name - Why - So You Want To Be A rock 'n' Roll Star - Have You Seen Her Face - C.T.A. 102 - Renaissance Fair - Time Between - Everybody's Been Burned

CANNED HEAT - BOOGIE WITH CANNED HEAT  - Factory Sealed  LIBERTY RECORDS S11-18116 1995 RE-ISSUE - The nicest thing you can do for your stylus and your ears.

"Fried Hockey Boogie" is the prototype of a Canned Heat concert staple which appeared in its entirety of sides 3 & 4 of their "Living the Blues" album as "Refried Boogie", a live version that was the longest rock track: 43 minutes. The song then showed up as another live version on the second "Woodstock" album as the "Woodstock Boogie". That version was only a couple of minutes longer than the one on this album--13 minutes. And of course, many years later, ZZ Top gave us the song "La Grange".

That's four (count 'em) different titles for what's basically the same number: a moderate tempo shuffle built on an A-C-D chord structure. But this one--"Fried Hockey Boogie"--is the original, and at 11 minutes contains one of the shortest drum solos heard except for Ringo's in the side B medley on "Abbey Road". It's actually more like a 'Forties Swing drum solo ending with Canned Heat's trademark benediction: "Don't forget to boogie."

LOVE - DA CAPO - 150 Gram Limited Edition classic audiophile analog LP high-definition Heavy Virgin Vinyl pressing for superior fidelity. The nicest thing you can do for your stylus and your ears. The ultimate record -- the way music was meant to be heard

Jimi Hendrix wasn’t the only black musician making inspired psychedelic rock in 1966. Memphis-born, L.A.-bred Arthur Lee combined his flair for Technicolor R & B with Bryan MacLean’s talent for ornate show tunes to form a wonderfully schizophrenic combination in Love.

Their second album from November 1966, featuring the explosive 7 and 7 Is, a top forty-hit in 1966 and an all-time garage-punk classic. Exact reproduction taken from the analog master tapes.
