Chicago trumpeter Miles Davis was moving at frightening speed across 1956, recording the Prestige material that would later become some of jazz's most endlessly dissected sessions. Pulled from dates with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, this set still feels remarkably alive. 'Airegin' snaps forward with wiry hard bop urgency, Coltrane already tugging against the music's neat edges, then 'My Funny Valentine' hangs low and smoky as Davis turns the silence into part of the arrangement itself. 'Blues By Five' meanwhile swings with loose after-hours elegance. The remastering keeps the warmth and grit fully intact.
