Label/Format: Atlantic – Original red and maroon (‘Plum’) format (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both in super condition, fresh, clean and highly attractive with any of the few spindle marks, fine, light and faint. Just a couple of faint dull spots on side one that only shows under angled light, so minor, my revealing scanner failed to pick them up. Two classic labels that simply defy their great ages.

Cat Number: 2401005.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 133 grams. A very good weight for this record. I once had a Plum copy of this one that weight a mere 101 grams.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce especially in very lightly played condition. This was a very late ‘plum’ issue with the label design and catalogue number changing within the same year. Prime condition examples on this original label are at a premium and this quite difficult record, that has some very quiet passages, plays superbly. Also worthy of mention is the cover: one that rarely wears well, but apart from one small rub on the spine, has little else to fault and the main faces look fantastic – that rarely the case and often seen with heavy ring wear, rubbing, grubbiness and sticker marks – the small spine mark apart, this has avoided anything else of real note. Finally, this is one of the earliest pressings ever made with the matrixes seen below and the inner sleeve date coded 0371 (March 1971), few will better this significantly.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Hot on the heels of the superb first issue Stephen Stills I am offering, is another of the greatest albums ever, and possibly one of the last ‘Plum’ Atlantics before the transition to Kinney. Two closely related masterpieces and both from the same collection too. Peaking at 12 in both the US and UK album charts this Dave Crosby classic was justifiably popular and remains his finest ever moment as a ‘solo’ artist. Not that solo is really the correct term here as he is joined by the cream of San Francisco artists of this era. In no particular order; Crosby performs with all the following: Graham Nash; Neil Young; Phil Lesh; Bill Kreutzmann; Jorma Kaukonen; Grace Slick; Gregg Rolie; Joni Mitchell; Mickey Hart; David Frieberg; Henry Diltz; Paul Kantner; Michael Shrieve; Gary Burden; Stephen Barncard; Robert Hammer; David Geffen; Ethan Crosby; Laura Allen; Jerry Garcia; Jack Cassady, Ronald Stone and Elliot Roberts – as you would expect the backing and performances are nothing less than immaculate, a blend of musical brilliance seldom bettered on an album of this type. Vocally, Crosby was inspired and never sounded much better than here, spiritual, powerful and convincing, a man at the peak of his powers. The backing musicians are allowed space to perform and this is an unselfish record. This is a very strong copy too and purchased by just the one-owner-from-new. It plays with very little unwanted and a cover that can be held and admired – the very small spine rub apart, it is almost as good as they get.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being ultra critical taking into account the small rub on the spine that has clipped a couple of the letters on the title and minor edge rubbing. An unlaminated gatefold format with a very matt finish with a gentle hint of surface texturing to the sensitive fingertip. The card is quite soft and fragile and is seldom seen without significant wear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Cover Front: Nigh-on flawless: clean, fresh, unrubbed or creased. A wonderful graphic of a sunset with Crosby superimposed atop – this will rarely be seen better.

Cover Back: Same again, totally devoid of any hint of ring wear with just the faintest trace of a semi-crease near the top right corner that hardly even registers.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Pristine, with pictures of all the players on view. I cannot fault this as all.

Top Edges: Any rub traces are patchy and mostly very light.

Bottom Edges: Barely any wear at all, being an unprotected storage edge, almost remarkable.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly sharp with very little wear, any thickening or burring very little and mild as seen viewed end-on. The front closed, the record enters on the back, both are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, clean, straight and folded totally square so the edges meet up almost flush and parallel. A gentle tilt to right and one smallish rub, just right of centre that has clipped two characters in the album title. All other text is perfect and unworn. The rub the most significant issue on what would otherwise be an outstanding cover, and being being honest and putting into context, this small rub is minor when all else is so lovely. Lastly, both the spine fold hinges are practically unworn with the ink all virtually intact – a small, very fine rub near the bottom top corner – again this is often seen with white folds, but not the case here.

Corners: Small tip rubs are almost the least you can expect from such a fragile cover, and little more than that on this one. All retain very fine or better shape.

Cover Summary: Lovely vintage piece of art, and seldom will it be found a great deal better. One to please many, if not most collectors

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): this copy includes it’s original Polydor style lined inner which as only modest ageing due to the usual darkening of the adhesive on the seams. This has two immaculate, crisp and undamaged window circles and very clear lining that has only very mild crinkle traces. Hardly any creasing at all and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Importantly, this is date-coded 11 0371 (March 1971), proving it to be one of the earliest pressings ever made in the UK (please see this detail in close-up).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): this being very critical one what I am sure is a very lightly played record that offers terrific sound. Two tiny pressing bumps on side two emit a couple of gentle ticks – that a natural manufacture blemish, but very minor indeed. A very fine visual example that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks or blemishes are very light, fine and faint, these seen with scrutiny under bright light. There are NO penetrating scratches on this lovely clean record. Visually a strong example that should please many collectors, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Atlantic record mostly plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault other than the couple of gentle ticks from the tiny pressing bumps – one falling almost between the final two tracks on the album as the penultimate song fades. So just two faint ‘taps’, like a finger gently tapping a table that are hardly even audible. This has always been a difficult album and few will ever play anything close to ‘silent’. Talking to a couple friends a little while ago, both said they bought copies of this round issue time and they both agreed pressing quality was far from quiet. So this one I also feel is exceptional. Any surface sound is minimal, very infrequent and ultra faint – barely any in fact, and I remind I play all my records on very sensitive equipment. An album with many very quiet passages, what chance a 41+ year-old copy when even brand new ones were often noisy from day one? This offers clear, precise, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, beautifully produced by the man himself. It offers hugely enjoyable and mostly very clean audio quality. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored within a non-smoking environment. A beautiful recording and a gateway into the recording studio itself, nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy does it almost maximum justice and merits strong recommendation.

End Piece: Recognised by critics and fans as one of the genuine all-time greats, this was Crosby’s debut ‘solo’ album, and a very busy time for the man after first producing Joni Mitchell’s debut and teaming up with Stills, Nash and Young for other albums. This record is an extraordinary work by any standards and essentially a mood piece with Crosby using vocal and guitar chords to stunning effect, the final song even has an eerie Gregorian chant feel, an amazing finale to a sublime release. This album is a real treasure and I am delighted to offer such a fine all-round copy. The cover I have rarely seen better. Remember the Kinney orange and green labelled copies were only just around the corner when this album was issued making the ‘Plums’ more scarce and somewhat elusive. Especially so in such fine condition. A host of stars make this record very special – as well as being a late Plum album, it should appeal to scarce vinyl collectors anyway. For those who originally thought Dave Crosby is not really for them, think again, give this one a try, you WILL discover a man inspired, this is as uplifting as music gets. No music lover could fail to be moved by this.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
