Following through with the avant-garde inclinations of Station to Station, yet explicitly breaking with David Bowie's past, Low is a dense, challenging album that confirmed his place at rock's cutting edge.
Driven by dissonant synthesizers and electronics, Low is divided between brief, angular songs and atmospheric instrumentals.
Throughout the record's first half, the guitars are jagged and the synthesizers drone with a menacing robotic pulse, while Bowie's vocals are unnaturally layered and overdubbed. During the instrumental half, the electronics turn cool, which is a relief after the intensity of the preceding avant pop.
Half the credit for Low's success goes to Brian Eno, who explored similar ambient territory on his own releases. Eno functioned as a conduit for Bowie's ideas, and in turn Bowie made the experimentalism of not only Eno but of the German synth group Kraftwerk and the post-punk group Wire respectable, if not quite mainstream.
Though a handful of the vocal pieces on Low are accessible -- "Sound and Vision" has a shimmering guitar hook, and "Be My Wife" subverts soul structure in a surprisingly catchy fashion -- the record is defiantly experimental and dense with detail, providing a new direction for the avant-garde in rock & roll.
This record peaked at No 2 in the UK album charts but it was claimed many returned this record to the shops feeling let-down by the lack of vocals – but time has corrected any over hasty misgivings for this wonderful record.
Low has risen to the top of many critics’ “Greatest Album” lists. In 2000 ‘Q’ Magazine placed it at number 14 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever and by 2003, the album was ranked number 249 in ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Track Listing:

Side 2: Warszawa / Art Decade / Weeping Wall / Subterraneans
LABELS: Clean, bright and fresh labels with just the slightest evidence of play - MINT-
VINYL Visual: The record lies perfectly flat on the turntable and both surfaces retain their original deep, like-new glossy sheen - MINT-
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio throughout with a crystal clear, deep, rich and detailed sound - beautifully recorded and engineered and on playback at a very loud volume (which is how I always listen to my records prior to listing and it's always a great pleasure to return to this one) the audio delivery is flawless - this is a an exceptionally clean pressing with just a very minor, light touch of surface noise on the run-ins but absolutely nothing else to fault. The angular, aggressive first side sounds incredibly vibrant with an immediacy only ever found on vinyl (very up-front) while the atmospheric soundscapes of Side Two are simply stunning. Critically graded a NEAR MINT for audio quality this is fantastic copy and one very highly recommended indeed
SLEEVE: The sleeve is clean and bright with no edge/spine wear to speak of and a sharp spine with all text clear and bold. This is an extremely well preserved example of a very easily worn sleeve - EXCELLENT+
INSERT: Not a lyric sheet but an insert with the track listing and the musicians featured on this classic record. It is clean and fresh with just one light mark on the top edge (very minor) - EXCELLENT+
