Description
This is THE true rarity in David Ackles' catalogue.
A promo single recorded in the USA in 1971 with Lonnie Mack producing. Elektra EKM45712. Printed FOR RADIO STATION USE ONLY.
It was issued in very limited numbers for radio airplay but was never given a commercial release. Shortly after, David went to live in England where he eventually recorded "American Gothic".
The A side is "One Night Stand" which David would record again in England with Bernie Taupin producing. The B side is a remake of "Be My Friend" from his debut (self titled) album.
These are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT RECORDINGS to the songs that you know on the albums.
The Rhino box set "There Is a River" was to have included both, but David's family stopped its release in 2007 and it may be that these songs will now never see the light of day. Here's your only chance to hear them, as I'm parting with one of the two copies I own.
"One Night Stand" is slower than the later version and has a more dramatic arrangement with strings and a more prominent drum part.
"Be My Friend" begins with a picked guitar intro (Lonnie Mack?) before the piano and David's vocal enter. Again it's more dramatic than the album version with strings from the end of the second verse.
The vocal in both songs seems further forward than usual and gives the impression that David recorded his part in one take with the piano.
The single has picked up some sleeve scuffs and a little dust over the years, but is otherwise exactly as it was when pressed. It has a little light surface noise and the odd very light click, but these very minor flaws don't seriously detract. NO loud pops, skips etc. I've played it maybe 2-3 times only and I doubt it was ever played before I found it.
