David Ackles, was one of the great undiscovered bards of Americana. Along with his peers (Fred Neil, Tim Buckley, Leonard Cohen, Dino Valenti ), he was an important player in the late psych/existentialist folk movement which swept through American collective soul in the mid-to-late 1960's; Ackles created one of the most memorable and lasting poetic and lyrical vision ever.

For those who are unfamiliar with this great singer/songwriter, the following are the excerpts from his obituary which appeared in the "Goldmine" issue # 501 dated October 8, 1999. : "…Critically acclaimed songwriter David Ackles, whose 1972 album. "American Gothic” has often been hailed as a masterpiece, died of cancer on March 2, 1999. (…) Revered by the likes of Elvis Costello, Elton John and Phil Collins, the American-born Ackles enjoyed a cult following in England , though commercial success forever eluded him. (…) It was his exquisite songwriting , captured on four brilliant albums between 1968 and 1974 - that garnered Ackles the boundless respect of his peers. Characterized by Britain's "Independent Newspaper" as ranging from simple melodies to complex arrangements that could have come from the pen of Leonard Bernstein or George Gershwin". Ackles' work remains one of rock's undiscovered treasures.", unquote.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-         Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) in one corner (a small piece of paperboard missing)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.  Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-         Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
