Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with only light to light+, fine and mainly faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. The odd small mark being critical.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Dave Mason, formerly of Traffic, issued this his first solo album in 1970. It features a host of musicians and backing vocalists and is a quality set. Issued on the progressive Harvest label, it features a spectacular cover with a double folded gatefold design with a intricate shaped top. The lower middle has a semi-circle cut wallet-like storage area for the record. Also this has a hole cut into the top right corner, which is totally correct – this is NOT a deletion punch. I have not seen this album too many times and seldom in worthy shape to offer. Clearly, this cover especially is prone to damage and wear and this to date, the nicest example seen. For fans of that early Traffic sound, this debut is sure to appeal as well.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better. An unlaminated tri-opening gatefold cover with shaped top and recessed inside storage area. Matt, smooth surfaces on all. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: Apart from a mild crease on the bottom left corner, this front is near perfect. Clean, fresh and unrubbed, the hole, as mentioned further up, is totally correct as made in manufacture. This IS NOT a delection punch.

Cover Back: The back is practically the same again with just a small tip rub to the top right.

Second Flap: This is shaped and all is nigh-on pristine on both sides. Even the small punched hole retains it’s centre e.g. not pushed out.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside has no wear, only the aforementioned corner creases. The wallet or storage area is totally unworn or damaged.

Top Edges: Neat and mainly sharp with any thickening or burr traces very little and light.

Bottom Edges: A little thickening in places, but still neat overall for these traditional storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Two closed edges here and both are crisp, neat and unrubbed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. No text printed on this spine and the graphic shows minimal rubbing up to the ends that have rubbed a little. The central area has a fine surface crease but little else.

Corners: The exterior tips have rubbed a little except the bottom right set, that are superb. All the area of the shaped top flap is crisp and totally unworn or even creased.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile and unusual Harvest cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: the original Harvest inner has it’s lining and SHTC 251 number written on the edge of the back. It has aged a little with some edge adhesive darkening and some creasing. All edges intact with no repairs

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: light dulling seen again under angled light from the inner bag, in terms of this harmless trait of these inners, very mild indeed and hardly even showing with normal viewing. Still a very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with only modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and faint. Visually an excellent record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quie elusive record plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, infrequent and gentle indeed and no pops or significant clicks were noted and overall, this is an very clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only modestly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. I doubt if the record has seen light-of-day for decades, thus the very mild inner bag dulling that has NO effect on play whatsoever. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
