Sexy D'Angelo verabschiedet sich vom Mainstream mit dieser heiß ersehnten Platte, die auf sein derbes, ungestümes R&B-Debüt Brown Sugar folgte. Er erhält hierbei die immense Hilfe von der außergewöhnlich kompromisslosen Produktion mit Genehmigung und Unterstützung von Amir "?Questlove" Thompson von The Roots (Do You Want More) und DJ Premier (Gang Starr), die die Musik zum Leben erwecken. Seine vielseitige, phantastische Stimme ist hier die Hauptattraktion und erinnert an die besonderen Leistungen von Prince, Marvin Gaye und Curtis Mayfield und darüber hinaus sind die Texte noch erstklassige Lektionen in Lust und Liebe.

Die dreizehn Stücke umfassen eine Bandbreite von "Playa Playa", das mit seinem Hau-Ruck-Bläser-Arrangement dank des Trompeters Roy Hargrove in jede Spelunke passen würde. Es geht weiter mit dem Soul-Klassiker von Roberta Flack "Feel like Makin' Love" mit dem Gaststar Lauryn Hill, der Königin des Hip-Hop-Soul und dann zu "Send It On", das Purple One beträchtliche Unterstützung verdankt. "Devil's Pie" ist eine gespenstige Jazz-Soul-Melodie voller List und Tücken, die eigentlich für Wahnsinnsausbrüche auf dem Tanzparkett sorgen müsste. Und für verwirrte Neulinge gibt es den Hip-Hop-Knaller "Left and Right" mit Method Man und Redman.

Voller Atmosphäre und cool kann man hiermit in einer langen heißen Nacht die ganze Welt total vergessen. Dies alles ist in der Tat etwas für die Damenwelt und für alle Boys mit gutem Geschmack.

oodoo is the second studio album by American R&B and neo soul musician D'Angelo, released January 25, 2000 on Virgin Records. Recording sessions for the album took place during 1998 to 1999 at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, with an extensive line-up of musicians associated with the Soulquarians musical collective. Primarily produced by D'Angelo, Voodoo contains an experimental, groove-based funk sound and serves as a departure from the conventional structure of his debut album Brown Sugar (1995). The album features lyrical themes such as spirituality, love, sexuality, growth, and fatherhood.

Amid heavy promotion and an anticipated release, the album was met with a considerable amount of commercial and critical success. It debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 320,000 copies in its first week, with help from the single "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" and its controversial music video. Upon its release, Voodoo received general acclaim from most music critics and earned D'Angelo several accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. It has sold over 1.7 million copies in the U.S. and has been certified platinum in sales by the Recording Industry Association of America.

The album is D'Angelo's last studio album prior to a sabbatical period of legal controversies and absence from the music scene, following the end of the album's international supporting tour in late 2000. While successful early on, the tour eventually became marked by concert cancellations and D'Angelo's personal frustrations. Despite not duplicating his debut album's commercial success, Voodoo has been regarded by music writers as D'Angelo's masterpiece and a creative milestone of the neo soul genre. In 2003, the album was ranked number 488 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Michael Eugene Archer (born February 11, 1974), better known by his stage name D'Angelo, is an American R&B and neo soul singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer.

D'Angelo is known for his production and songwriting talents as much as for his vocal abilities, and often draws comparisons to his influencers, Marvin Gaye, and Prince. D'Angelo was one of the most influential artists during the rise of the neo-soul movement.

His first two studio albums, Brown Sugar and Voodoo, have garnered much commercial and critical acclaim, and have been cited as "two of the most excellent and singular R&B albums of the past 15 years".[4] Rock critic Robert Christgau has dubbed him as "R&B Jesus".[5]

Since the year 2000, D'Angelo has conducted no interviews, live performances or released any new material, save for minor collaborations with other artists, and sporadic unfinished demos leaked to the internet. A follow up album to Voodoo, has been rumoured and speculated since the mid-2000s but is still pending release or announcement.
