Here’s a GREAT CREAM PROMO LP that you rarely run across these days.

In this auction:

• “ATCO RECORDS PROMOTIONAL LP FOR RECORD DEPARTMENT-IN-STORE-PLAY” containing “Excerpts from Atco LP 33-240 NEW YORK ROCK & ROLL ENSEMBLE” and “Excerpts from Atco LP 2-700 CREAM WHEELS OF FIRE”

• This is a PROMO-ONLY SAMPLER LP.

• This is Atco Records 119/120.

• It was issued in 1968.

• The A-side promotes an LP by the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble . The B-side promotes the “WHEELS OF FIRE” LP by CREAM.

• This “Record Store Sampler” LP was released in 1968.

• It is a WHITE LABEL PROMO PRESSING!

• As you probably know, PROMOTIONAL RECORDS were provided ONLY to DJs and Radio Stations for on-air play and/or to Retail Store Record Departments for in-store play to promote the single or LP. They were issued in very small/limited quantities, and they were NOT available for sale to the general public.

• It’s really a UNIQUE PROMO LP. Here’s what’s on the Cream

  B-side:

  1) The side begins with an Announcer (with Don Pardo of Jeopardy-type voice) who says: “ATCO Records has just released one of the greatest record packages of all time. It’s called “Wheels of Fire” by Cream. It’s a two-record set, one recorded live at the Fillmore Auditorium and one recorded in the studio. Now, here’s a selection from the live recording. It’s called “Crossroads”.

  2) “Crossroads” track plays.

  3) At the end of the track, the Announcer says: “That was “Crossroads” from Cream’s great new two-record set, “Wheels Of Fire”, recorded at the Fillmore Auditorium. Now, here’s “Train Time”:

  4) “Train Time” track plays.

  5) At the end of the track, the Announcer says: “Train Time” from the Fillmore recording on the fantastic new ATCO two-record set. It’s called “Wheels Of Fire”. Don’t forget that name, by Cream. This unprecedented package is available in this record department.”

  6) Announcer continues: “ATCO Records has just released one of the greatest record packages of all time. It’s called “Wheels Of Fire” by Cream. Now, this is a two-record set, but a two-record set like you’ve never heard before: one recorded live at the Fillmore auditorium and one recorded in the studio. Now, here’s a selection from the studio recording. It’s called “White Room”.

  7) “White Room” track plays.

  8) At the end of the track, the Announcer says: “White Room” is the name of it from Cream’s fantastic new two-record set, “Wheels Of Fire”, on ATCO Records. Now, let’s listen to “Pressed Rat and Warthog”

  9) “Pressed Rat and Warthog” track plays.

  10) At the end of the track, the Announcer says: “Yeah, that’s the name of it, “Pressed Rat and Warthog” from “Wheels Of Fire”, a two-record set on ATCO Records by Cream. It’s available in this record department.”

• As you can see, this LP is a TRUE PROMOTIONAL RECORD with an ANNOUNCER providing the names of key tracks and repeatedly saying the name of the band (CREAM) and the LP being promoted (WHEELS OF FIRE) which makes it much different than regular white label promotional LP issues where the content is merely the same tracks as on the LP produced for sale to the public.

• The COVER is in WEAK VG CONDITION The white cover has moderate overall wear and aging. The front has images of the covers of the “NEW YORK ROCK & ROLL ENSEMBLE” LP and Cream’s “WHEELS OF FIRE” LP. The rear cover is blank. There is a little bit of minor flaking on the top and bottom seams with a 2-inch split in the middle of the bottom seam. There is wear on the corners (“balding” and light “feathering”). The front cover has a sticker stain near the upper right corner. The rear cover has moderate aging and wear and some small scuffs and spots.

• The VINYL is in VG CONDITION. There are a number of very light surface hairlines/scuffs (but none are “feel-able”). I, of course, played the “Cream” side to provide the transcript, and there are a few very minor pops, but they DO NOT overwhelm the listening experience at all. The vinyl has lots of gloss!

• The WHITE LABELS are CLEAN with ONLY MINOR AGING. There is NO SOILING and NO WRITING on them. The labels have “PROMOTIONAL RECORD FOR RECORD DEPT. IN-STORE PLAY” printed on them.

You often find Cream White-Label Promo LPs, but this “Promotional Record for Record Department In-Store Play” is MUCH LESS COMMON, for sure. So, don’t pass up this unique announcer-formatted PROMO LP that was issued to promote Cream’s “Wheels Of Fire” LP.
