Description

First Philadelphia Computer Music Festival

label & cat. no.:
Creative Computing CR101 pressed in:
USA date:
1979 format:
LP Vinyl: (sealed)
Cover: nm (sealed, minor wear at corners) Impossible-to-find perfect sealed copy of this scarce album privately issued by Creative Computing Magazine to document the 1978 Philadelphia Computer Music Festival (which was part of the Personal Computing '78 convention). The selections showcase the various digital audio technology available at the time, including some obscure synthesizers, featuring the RCA COSMAC, ALF, NOTRAN, Software Technology, Newtech, Solid State, and Schertz computer music systems. The machines "play" a strangely eclectic mix of pop and classical tracks by the Beatles, Scott Joplin, J.S.Bach, Rimsky-korsakov (played backwards!), Neil Diamond, Pachelbel, Johann Wanhal, and others, using mostly early video game-like sounds (think Donkey Kong-era). There's also an archival track by D.H. Van Lenten of Bell Laboratories, 'Synthesized Computer Speech Demonstration,' an excerpt from the Computer Speech ep originally issued in small numbers by Bell Labs in 1963 (Van Lenten was among the first researchers of computer-generated music/speech at Bell Labs along with Max Mathews, John R. Pierce, Newman Guttman, James Tenney, Jean-Claude Risset, etc.). The insert has additional notes about the festival and the magazine (with juicy headings like 'What is computer music?' and 'The personal computer revolution').

Some points of reference for this lp: Paul Beaver, Bernie Krause, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack, Pierre Henry, Tomita, Vangelis, Jean-Jacques Perrey, Gershon Kingsley, Robert Moog, Tom Dissevelt, Donald Buchla, Dick Hyman, Paul Lansky, Jon Appleton, Pietro Grossi, Piero Umiliani... Check out my other auctions this week for more avant garde/experimental, early electronic/electroacoustic/synthesizer, sound sculpture, 20th century classical, microtonal, crazy children's albums, world music/ethnography, jazz, and psych lps. US Shipping is 5.00 for 1-2 single records by Media Mail, then 0.50 for each additional; Priority Mail is also available but pricing depends on zipcode and will be calculated after auction closes (or you can email me with your address for a quote); other expedited shipping options and insurance are all available on request.
International Shipping for 1 12" lp to Western Europe/UK/Scandinavia/Japan/Taiwan/Australia is 15.00 for First Class Airmail; to Canada is 8.50 for First Class Airmail; other international destinations vary, please email for a quote. 7" records will cost less; heavy box sets will cost more. Insured Priority Airmail with tracking is also available but pricing depends on destination country and will be calculated after auction closes (or you can email me with your address for a quote). Combine multiple items to save on shipping. Note: I can also offer international buyers the super-cheap M-Bag bulk airmail rate for orders of 9 or more lps; to most destinations this costs 35.00 for up to 17 lps, a huge per-record savings over standard rates for smaller parcels! Feel free to email with any shipping questions. Payment - I prefer Paypal (which allows for fastest possible shipment) and also accept money order (from US financial institutions only, including BidPay, US Postal, certified US bank check, etc., international bidders please take note!). If you are paying by Paypal and have won multiple items, please use a single Paypal payment. I will send an invoice email to all winners shortly after my auctions close, and another email after payment has been received to confirm item shipment. Packing - I pack professionally and with the utmost care drawn from years of experience trading vinyl internationally. I use new record mailers from Cameron Packaging (which I have determined are the best and most protective) reinforced with cardboard inserts and bubble wrap padding. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know. Feel free to email me if you have any questions (need more info, want more pictures, etc.); you can use the 'ask seller a question' link above. Records are visually graded unless otherwise noted; my condition rating scale is -G+/-VG+/-EX+/-NM/M (only sealed records are M). Satisfaction guaranteed; if you have any problems with your order please contact me directly.
