Arsenio Rodriguez is to Cuban music, what Fela Kuti is to the Nigerian sound. A visionary, a pioneer, and an artist with a very particular style. Not only has he recorded over 200 songs, but the man was also responsible for championing the tres, a Cuban Guitar, and instilling the sound that we now refer to as 'mambo'. A pretty big deal. He was active during the 40s and 50s, a time which immediately makes you think of Margaritas and coconuts, and that's probably because of this man's music. The Grosso label have done a marvellous job here, as this is an important album for music and the development of new generations of musicians, as a whole, regardless of tastes. Fun, upbeat, and instantly takes you to the heart of Cuba. Recommended.
