RecordCollector Magazine's/ GoldmineStandard Grading Guide:

MINT (M): The recorditself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration insound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, bookletor poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or unplayedshould be Mint.

Near Mint (NM or M-) : A nearly perfect record. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhaps correctly)that no record is ever truly perfect. The record should show no obvioussigns of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the mostminor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slighthandling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or othernoticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either and of course, the sameshould be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and thelike. An LP in near mint condition looks as if you just got it home from a newrecord store and removed the shrink wrap. Near Mint is the highest price listedin all Goldmine price guides. Anything that exceeds this grade, in the opinionof both buyer and seller, is worth significantly more than the highest Goldminebook value.

EXCELLENT (EX+/EX/EX-): The recordshows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening insound quality. Light marks where the vinyl has been in and outof the inner sleeve, or tiny signs of use generally.

The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing. In general, if notfor a couple things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint.

Very Good Plus (VG+): Generally worth 50% of the Near Mintvalue. A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwisehandled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may showsome signs of wear, A little rub, light inaudible marks, a littlebackground crackle and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affectone's listening experiences.

Slight warps that do not affect the sound are "OK". The labelmay have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play.

Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, lightlyturned up corners, or a slight seam split. An LP cover may have slight signs ofwear due to age use handling and storage. Sleeve may be marred by a cut-outhole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print.

VG+ covers shouldhave only minor wear. A VG+ cover might have some very minor seam wear or asplit (less than one inch long) at the bottom, the most vulnerable location. Also, a VG+ cover may have some defacing, such as a cut-out marking. Coverswith cut-out markings can never be considered Near Mint.

VERY GOOD (VG): The record has obviously beenplayed many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable mild surface marks and the occasional mild light scratch, It’s seen a bit of life, but is still usable. Light pops andclicks, an edge split, light visible scratches. You can still listen to it andenjoy looking at it, but it is visually and audibly used.

VG covers will have many signs of human handling. Ring wear inthe middle or along the edges of the cover where the edge of a record wouldreside, is obvious, though not overwhelming. Some more creases might bevisible. Seam splitting will be more obvious; it may appear on all three sides, though it won’t be obvious upon looking. Someone might have written or it orstamped a price tag on it, too. Normal wear and tear on the cover dueto age storage use and handling, without any major defects.

Good Plus(G+): Generally worth10-15%of the Near Mint value. Good does not mean Bad ! A record in Good or Good Pluscondition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. Butit will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear(on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white).

A cover or sleeve will have seamsplits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear orother defects will start to overwhelm the object. A Good to G+ cover has ring wear to the point of distraction, has seam splits obvious on sight and may have even heavier writing, such as,for example, huge radio station letters written across the front to detertheft.

GOOD (G): The record has been played somuch that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with somedistortion and mild scratches. The record will be playable without skipping, noticeable surface noise and “ticks” will almost certainly accompany theplayback.

The cover and contentssuffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still justplayable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surfacenoise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / ordefaced.

POOR (P): The record will not playproperly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents willbe badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD (B): The record is unplayable ormight even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.

Generic Sleeve: A type of sleeve that is not specific to therecord. A generic sleeve is either a plain sleeve or a company sleeve withstandard company artwork. A sleeve that is graded as “generic” needs no furthergrading, as a generic sleeve generally adds little value to the item and can beeasily replaced.
