Description

This is the genuine South African release from 1974 (42 years ago!) There are very few of these LPs left for sale. Most record sellers at South African flea markets have signs up reading: No Rodriguez LPs available!

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer/songwriter and guitarist, released his first album Cold Fact on the Sussex label in 1970. It’s one of the lost classics of the late 1960s to early 1970s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in colour and inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion. Relatively unknown in the USA, Rodriguez was unaware that his defining album had become a cult classic in South Africa, selling an estimated half-million copies. After releasing further albums such as: Coming From Reality, After The Fact and The Best of Rodriguez, he then disappeared from the music scene for over two decades until he was rediscovered working as a day laborer in Detroit, Michigan.

Searching for Sugar Man, a documentary on his musical journey, won the Oscar for best documentary at the 85th annual Academy Awards in 2013 and helped push the reissue of his first album Cold Fact back onto the Billboard 200. In 85 years of the Academy Awards, only a handful of music-oriented films have won the documentary prize.

This Rodriguez Cold Fact LP is in very good condition for a 42 year old record. When playing, there are two minor nick sounds on the Sugarman track, but they are so slight and brief that it does not affect the song. The rest of the tracks play perfectly and the cover is also in very good condition – and that’s a concrete Cold Fact!
