Description
With many regrets, I am selling a lifetime collection of LPs – about 18 linear feet of non-digital music – which calculates to about 1,100 recordings.
It goes from Bach to Wagner with an abundance of Beethoven, Mozart, Mahler, Rachmaninoff, Sibelius and pretty much anyone else you can name. These recordings - predominantly analog - were made from the late ‘50s to the mid-‘80s and represent virtually every major label, performer and conductor. Most of them are stereo; an occasional mono slipped in, probably because of the performer or performance. They are all in good to excellent condition. There’s nothing anyone can do about the occasion pop or click from faulty vinyl, but I kept them clean and protected and only used SOTA equipment for playback.
There are a number of duplications; more like it, you’ll find several different recordings of the same piece, like Beethoven’s 3rd or 5th, Mahler 3rd, etc. There are also complete albums of all Beethoven’s symphonies, Grieg’s piano music, etc.
The record labels are legend: DG, Angel, Decca, RCA, Phillips, London, Vox, Vanguard, Columbia and many others. The conductors include Bernstein, Ormandy, Solti, Steinberg, Kubelik, Karajan, Abbado., Stokowski, Barbiroli and more.
And, for opera lovers, about 40 albums of complete operas including works by Puccini, Wagner, Verdi and Strauss, with performers such as Callas, DiStefano, Gobbi, Tucker and Merrill.
Finally, there are about 50 albums of folk music from the same era including Theodore Bikel, Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem, Odetta, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie.
I live in a suburb of Philadelphia, and it is difficult to envision shipping this collection – it weighs several hundred pounds. I suspect the winner will come and get them with either a full-sized SUV, mini-van or pick-up truck. It is possible that I could meet you half-way – we’ll figure it out when the time comes.
Just one thing: this is not a pick-and-choose situation. I’m not selling a few of the best – I’m selling everything, and I expect the winner to come and take everything. Good luck!
