1957 Chess Records First Pressing

VG+/VG+

A true “birth” of Rock ‘N Roll Classic from one of the Founding Fathers. I’ll be as detailed as possible in describing this relic’s condition and playback.

Record: Just played it (3 times) for a fresh review.

After several opening pops in ‘SCHOOLDAY (Ring Ring Goes The Bell)’ it’s smooth sailing the rest of the way (both sides). Plays beautifully. Rarely any background noise with a well cared for surface on Side 1 and Side 2. There are some visible light marks but nothing that can be felt when running your fingers over the surface. Still shiny and in solid VG+ condition. A pleasure to listen to. Both black and silver labels are clean with only some faint spindle marks.

Cover: (Please notice the upper right corner of the front cover lacks the Yellow Box found on all but First Pressings.)

95% of the front cover gloss is still intact and chip free. The only missing gloss can be found - center/top/front (see pics). About 1/3 of the top seem is split at the opening, right side. Bottom seam is 100% tight. The spine is split but miraculously retains most of the original material and luckily almost all of the original printing (title, etc.). The mostly white back is in pretty nice condition compared to most first pressings I’ve seen. Still has a light gloss to it and remains white. I’ve tried to provide pictures that show everything I’m describing but will say the actual record and cover do look a bit better in person without all the bright lighting bearing down.

In closing, here’s a really solid and playable First Pressing of a Chuck Berry Classic from 1957 that’s not near mint but absolutely an honest VG to VG+. A better than decent copy.
