Description

This is the rare 1950 commercial release of Dial 901, the Charlie Parker compilation album The Bird Blows the Blues.
The jacket is in VG shape, with a previous owner's name stamped on the rear and what looks like a piece of tape over the record label's address at bottom rear. There is a short seam split at the bottom near the sleeve opening, but otherwise no splits.
The original yellow label is in excellent shape. There is a deep groove and the Plastylite "ear" is etched in the dead wax.
Generally, this record was well cared for by a previous owner. Because it was sourced from the original 78 recordings, there is significant noise, and it is difficult to tell what of the noise was baked into the recording versus what is introduced by the record surface. There is a good bit of sheen to the surface, but also some visible scratches. I do hear what may be groove wear. But the record plays through without any skips or jumps, and it is still an enjoyable listen, considering the age of the recording.
This is a rare record worth hundreds of dollars. It's Charlie Parker on the Dial label, and it was the first 12" LP in the jazz genre, ever. It compiles the original master recordings on the A side and presents alternate takes of the same songs on the B side--the first ever compilation to do so, taking advantage of the greater running time of the 12" format.
