Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only few and mainly light spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Around half-a-dozen on side two and only one (and a trace) on the first. This very heavy early issue appears to be a Pye pressing.

Cat Number: LBG 83400.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A typical heavy pressing by this manufacturer.

Rarity: Moderately scarce: and I have always found this harder to locate than the previous albums.

Brief Info: Album number six for this popular American band. All songs included were written and produced by John Fogerty and it sold fairly well. Slightly more varied in style and including another superb single in ‘Have You Ever Seen the Rain’. The final track even gives a taste for psych avant garde breaking new territory. This a very fine early heavy pressing, a few visual blemishes, but for sound, it has very little to fault at all and audio quality is high.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(-): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and including the ‘Patent pending’ text. Comes with the original polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: This marked down a little mainly for a scuff on the front, just below Stu Clifford’s beard – this is never an easy cover being dark, unprotected and with a thick quite heavy record inside, it is prone to all forms of wear. The scuff apart, this front – and the rest in general – is attractive with far less wear than many seen. Any surface marks are few and very fine as seen under angled light. Few creases at all and the only rubbing of any real note on the lower corner tips.

Cover Back: The back is superb and on it’s own would grade EX++. The odd small crease and fine surface blemishes, but finding this better will never prove easy. With no ring wear at all, this is most unusual.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is equally impressive with barely anything to really fault.

Top Edges: Any rub traces are tiny, few and faint, both remain straight.

Bottom Edges: A little light patchy rubbing on the back, little on the front.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint. Record enters on the back edge – both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A little patchy rubbing mainly near a natural fine central line that always happens simply by opening. Both folds, the really vulnerable areas, have largely escaped any, but a little near the ends. Still solid and straight with some modest compression. Folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. A gentle tilt to the left only. Somewhat against the odds, the text is practically fully present with barely any wear at all.

Corners: Light to moderate corner rubbing that few will escape totally. Fine to very fine shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: An attractive all-round example of this quite unforgiving 70’s cover that is prone to all forms of wear, one that could prove quite difficult to find much better. The modestly fine scuff on the front being the main issue, but hardly major. This first-issue example should please many collectors but not the more discerning.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white polylined inner that has aged little. The lining is ultra clear as seen through two pristine window circles and there are no edge splits or repairs. A few creases and minor crinkle but very little darkening. This is UK patented and has ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed with thick vinyl and deep grooves. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence. There is a mark at the beginning of side two which is largely superficial with around 4 or 5 dull faint ticks only. These largely obscured by the loud music present here and apart from one rev crackle trace in the pressing – blink and you miss it – there is little else to fault. Any other marks are light, few and fine surface types with no audio affect and visually a very fine record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fine record plays above it’s solid visual grading with little else to fault bar what I have mentioned above. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or other clicks were noted and overall, a very clean pressing with just the single rev crackle once heard (for barely a fraction of a second). Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This record again could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Not a copy for the very discerning, but overall, a very fine looker with mainly superb sound to match.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
