The release of this album in late 1957 marked the beginning of a glorious new phase in Count Basie's career. Signed to Roulette Records, the newly formed label owned by Morris Levy, the New York recording entrepreneur, jukebox mogul, club owner, and quasi-underworld figure, it took Basie's core audience and a lot of other people by surprise, as a bold, forward-looking statement within the context of a big-band recording -- if not as daring as what Duke Ellington had done at Newport in 1956, still a reminder that there was room for fresh, even dazzling improvisation (especially courtesy of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis's contribution) within the framework of a big-band jazz unit. The band and its key members were all "on" for these two days of sessions, and Neal Hefti's arrangements gave all concerned a chance to show what they could do. Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, stands out from the get-go with his solo on "Flight of the Foo Birds," a rewriting of "Give Me the Simple Life" on which the tenor-man shares the stage with Thad Jones's trumpet solo, but nearly knock Jones off that same stage with his pyrotechnics. Davis plunges into new territory, defining the Basie "Atomic" period with his solo on "Whirly-Birds" (originally less aptly titled "Roller Coaster"), which soars into the air on his break. Joe Newman and Thad Jones's muted trumpets are the featured instruments on "Duet." "The Kid From Red Bank" offers an unusual showcase for Basie himself at the piano, playing the least number of notes possible to surprise and bedazzle the listener, while "Li'l Darlin'" offers the Basie band's answer to Ellington's "Mood Indigo."

You know for certain that these guys are NOT screwing around from the very start of the opening track, "The Kid From Red Bank". In fact, you may often wonder whether they are often playing all of this crazy shit and breakneck tempos because they are literally on fire? It was immediately clear to me that I was now immersed in the virtual presence of true virtuosity. I'll admit that I'm a newbie when it comes to Count Basie, but I doubt it took me 30 seconds to figure out whether this album should be included on the "1001 Albums list". Ab-so-lutely. You don't have to be a jazz aficionado to tell that these guys are masters of their art. Do yourself a favor and stop whatever you're doing to listen to this. You won't regret it.

A bombastic record! A huge sound, vibrant solos, and upbeat compositions make this record a standout of 1950s big band music. The music is boisterous, raucous even, yet obviously written and performed with such astounding precision.

Interestingly enough, though the sheer volume and technical prowess of these recordings make the overall record absolutely unforgettable, the same qualities cause the individual songs of the record blend together, creating a record of little variety, with the lone exception of the gorgeous slow dance closer, "Lil' Darlin'."

(a)          THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).

(b)          The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-        Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged / bent.
