It is believed that she was a real woman who lived in the early 20th century, famous for being a counselor and fortune teller, with "Madame" being a title that denoted authority and hierarchy within these practices. The song by Cortijo y su Combo tells a humorous, everyday story from mid-century Puerto Rico. In the lyrics, the narrator complains to Madame Calalú about a gossipy neighbor who insults him (calling him bembú) and asks the seer to intercede spiritually for him so that the harassment stops.
