En 74, Alain Mion et Alain Gandolfi formèrent le groupe de jazz funk français Cortex, rare groupe français à avoir acquis une reconnaissance internationale. Souvent comparé à Return to Forever de Chick Coréa, Weather Report, ou bien George Duke, Cortex a développé un style unique au cours des quatre albums qu'ils sortirent entre 1974 et 1979. La renommée de Cortex n'a cessé de grandir depuis les années 70's jusqu'à atteindre le statut de groupe culte au quatre coins de la planète groove.

La presse qualifie le premier album de Cortex "Troupeau bleue" de chef d'oeuvre oublié et le range au panthéon de la musique jazz funk. A l'époque, leur premier album s'est vendu à plus de 7.000 exemplaires et fait marquant la réédition à plus de 12.000. "Troupeau Bleu" est probablement un des albums les plus denses, riches et intéressants que l'on puisse trouver en France à la fin des années 70.

Bien que très influencé par les groupes fusions jazz funk américains de l'époque et par la musique brésilienne de Sergio Mendés, Cortex a su développer un style unique et reconnaissable entre tous. Cortex est un véritable ovni. Il tire sa singularité du mélange d'influences musicales osées, voir même improbables et des arrangements finement orchestrés d'Alain Mion.

Alain Mion (arrangeur, clavier, voix), a acquis une solide formation et expérience. A la fin des 60's il accompagna Hank Mobley ou Philly Joe Jones au Blue Note. Il a décidé d'écrire en français et voue une admiration sans borne à Michel Legrand.

Tel un funambule, Cortex a réussi avec brio et maestria a créer un style unique. La musique de Cortex aux accents jazz funk brésilien est magnifiée, transcendée par une voix féminine enchanteresse qui donne une dimension lyrique, épique à certains morceaux. Les morceaux oscillent entre groove électrique imparable et morceaux éthérés teintés d'ésotérisme et de mélancolie.

Rares sont les groupes français à voir autant marqué de leur empreinte sonore une époque. La réputation n'a cessé de grandir jusqu'à devenir culte chez les "jazz funk" addicts du monde.

Après 30 ans d'absence Cortex se reforme cette année sous la direction de son leader Alain Mion. Leur musique a su toucher toutes les generations. Leurs disques sont considérès comme des "Holy Grail" par les diggers du monde entiers ("Troupeau Bleu" se vend à 500€ minimum). Album mythique, Troupeau Bleu est une œuvre majeure de jazz funk que Cortex enregistra en 2 jours de juillet 1975 au studio Damiens à Boulogne.
Composé intégralement par Alain Mion, fondateur du groupe, cet album est un concentré des différentes influences de ce pianiste de jazz surdoué.
Le disque s'ouvre sur La Rue, pur morceau de jazz funk embelli par les performances vocales de Mireille Dalbray, la chanteuse du groupe au timbre si particulier. Suit une ré-interprétation jazzy de Colchiques Dans Les Prés assez anecdotique et L'Enfant Samba, un titre exotique au tempo chaloupé.
Le disque prend ensuite des allures pop avec Troupeau Bleu, qui est avec Mary et Jeff, le titre phare de l'album : on est littéralement envoûté par Mireille Dalbray dont la voix reste gravée en mémoire après la première écoute du refrain.
Mais le plus beau reste à venir le titre "Huit Octobre 1971" et le morceau "Sabbat" décliné en 3 parties.
Il s'agit de la première réédition sur le fameux label dare dare !!!

The new imprint Trad Vibe Records is off to a great start this year with the announcement of three vinyl reissue titles covering the first three albums of 1970’s French unit Cortex. Troupeau Bleu is the debut record from Cortex and was the most popular statement from the group during the ’70’s. Electric jazz funk and fusion at its finest, the groups origin of France was an integral sonic influence to the overall direction of their sound. They retained a sense of identity that was formulating in the states during the same time but Cortex had a very authentic bridge into the ethos of their own land. The music of Troupeau Bleu is infectious and spell-binding from front to back and we highly recommend grabbing a copy of the new reissue series anywhere you can. Also available is the under appreciated 2nd and 3rd LP’s from Cortex, Vol. 2 and  Pourquoi. All three titles have been pressed as a limited edition run of 500 copies each and have been restored to their original package designs.Utterly essential repress of the debut LP of this french outfit. Rhodes led funk and jazz with insane drumbreaks, sometimes melancholic, sometimes vibrant and energetic, with vocals delivered in an abstract scat like way. You'd wish there were more albums like this one around. There must have been a very special atmosphere in the make shift studio on the 2 days these tracks were recorded in july 1975. Sampled by the late Dilla for the ''One Beer'' MF Doom Remix and used abundantly by Madlib on Mindfusion Vol 1. A gem for every collector who likes things french, deep and groovy and for everyone who simply likes good heartfelt music which grows on you every time you give it a listen. Highly recommended !"This is a wonderful lost album of grooves from France and it's got a sound that's unlike anything else we've ever heard! The group is a smooth funky jazz group -- with lots of electric bass and Fender Rhodes, similar to some of the Italian groups of the 70s (like The Cabildos), but they've also got a female singer in the mix, and she sings these groovy jazz vocals that have an airy breezy quality, similar to some of the best Brazilian fusion from the same time. The result is a stunning electric groove with a feeling that's really fresh, nice and warm, and funky in all the right parts. The original album's rare as hen's teeth and this reissue is very nicely done! Titles include "Automne", "L'enfant Samba", "La Rue", "Go Round", "Madbass", "Sabbat", "Mary et Jeff", and "Chanson D'un Jour D'Hiver"."
