COLD SUN 'Dark Shadows' LP (Spain, Guerssen, Catalogue #GUESS236) Brand new/unplayed copy of limited year 2024 Guerssen label LP (black vinyl) edition of what is perhaps recognized as the greatest previously shelved/previously unreleased ALL-TIME TEXAS DESERT PEYOTE-INFUSED PSYCHEDELIC ROCK MONSTER album entitled Dark Shadows by Austin, Texas, Billy Miller (Roky Erickson And The Aliens) led band Cold Sun. Originally recorded in Austin, Texas in 1970, shelved, and then first released (after much heroic behind-the-scenes efforts) by the Texas based Rockadelic Records in 1990 (in a now near unfindable edition of 300 copies, with extant offered copies commanding half a grand in the second-hand marketplace.) In 2008, the German label World In Sound issued another very limited (and now, of course, long out of print) edition which restored the artist's originally conceived track order. Here now, 16 years later, the Spanish Guerssen label provides for us all the finest presentation of this legendary album yet! Vivid peyote-induced psychedelia from Texas sounding like an impossible meld between the Elevators and the Velvet Underground but possessing a strongly unique disposition. Recorded in 1970 but never released at the time, featuring future members of Roky Erickson's backing band Bleib Alien/The Aliens. Formed in Austin in the late 1960s by visionary lyricist and autoharp player Billy Bill Miller and his friend Tom McGarrigle on guitar, Cold Sun evolved from a band called Cauldron (later Amethyst) which at one point featured drummer John Kearney from Roky Erickson's first band The Spades. Miller, a proto-Goth figure always dressed in black, highly influenced by Joe Meek and vintage sci-fi/horror movies, started to experiment with weird noises out of his electrified autoharp, favoring the audio-oriented drug mescaline over the LSD associated with hippies. Amethyst jammed with musicians such as Benny Thurman from the 13th Floor Elevators and Steve Webb from the Lost And Found. It was through Mike Waugh's friendship with Elevators drummer John Ike Walton that Billy Miller and the band hooked up with the local label/studio Sonobeat, who expressed interest in recording an album with the intention to shop it to a major label: thus, the now-legendary Cold Sun album was born. The band, driven by Miller's strange electrified autoharp sounds plus the massive fuzz guitar of McGarrigle, dressed with feedback and futuristic lyrics, laid down several tracks in between rehearsals at Miller's house on Castle Hill (west Austin). Never released at the time, the Cold Sun album languished in oblivion and the musicians moved on to other things. It wasn't until 1990 that the Cold Sun album was finally released on vinyl by the Rockadelic label (in a tiny edition of 300 copies), followed by a new edition on German label World In Sound in 2008, now out of print. For this new edition, Guerssen tried to imagine how the Cold Sun album could have looked like if it had been actually released in 1970. It comes in a hard cardboard sleeve with vintage styled artwork by psychedelic illustrator Callum Rooney. Sourced from the same audio master as the original Rockadelic LP, the sound has been vastly improved thanks to the meticulous and careful restoration/remastering by audiophile engineer Ezra Lesser, who has also penned the definitive story of Cold Sun for the liner notes.

"Austin band with an obvious Elevators influence recorded this amazing psychedelic demo LP in '70. There's no hints of prog or hard rock on this beast though, just 100% psychedelia. Truly inspired original and uncompromising stuff, it actually sounds like the logical next step after "Easter Everywhere" and "Bull Of The Woods" - great Texas desert psych! Most songs are long and winding full of echoey fuzz, Roky-inspired vocals, autoharp and some harmonica. It never gets into boring hippie jams though. It's more like entering a state of mind than listening to a regular album. The lyrics are also some of the best I've ever heard, managing to be totally strange and psychedelic without getting the least pretentious. Not only the best Rockadelic release, but possibly one of the best and most important psych reissues ever. Roky's first backing band, Bliebalien, were essentially made up of members of Cold Sun. We are record collectors here, too, and we pledge to package your records (or any other item) in a way in which we would like to have records/other items packaged, sent to us and received by us as well.

When packaging up records that are non-factory sealed items (as is standard for many import releases) or are open "used" items for shipment, we remove the LP and inner-sleeve from the album cover and place them on the outside of the cover to protect the cover from being subjected to any potential seam-splitting during transit.

When packaging up factory sealed records for shipment, we leave the item sealed, intact, as is. HOWEVER. If a customer REQUESTS that we unseal a factory sealed record to send with the LP and inner sleeve on the outside of the cover (to protect the cover from any potential seam-splitting during transit) we will do so. Please be sure to make this request of unsealing your record for shipment if that is your packaging preference.

When packaging up non-factory sealed items (or factory sealed items that have been unsealed at the buyer's request) that have custom company or other manner of printed inner-sleeves, we remove the record from those printed inner sleeves (returning the printed inner sleeves back into the album cover) and place them inside brand new, generic white paper inner sleeves, which are then placed on the outside of the album cover to protect both the album cover AND the original printed inner sleeves from being subjected to any potential seam splitting during transit. We do this for all new AND used items that are in our stock.

All LPs, be they new or used, are sheathed inside of new, protective plastic outer sleeves (with the exceptions of space or weight limitations that may occur with packaging your items - such exceptions will take place when they allow for a lower cost of shipping charged for your total order.)
