This was Coil's second album, cut after the addition of Stephen Thrower to the duo of Peter Christopherson and the late John Balance. Horse Rotorvator is easily one of Coil's all-time finest, a twisted plunge into song form that churns and throbs with ideas that provoke, mysterious sounds that disturb and a generous helping of the homoerotic male sexuality explored by this ensemble at their mad best. Coil expands their sonic palette considerably here from the electronic textures and sampled madness of their debut (1984's Scatology), adding skilfully deployed horns and strings to excellent effect and exploring new musical styles ranging from noir jazz to marching music to pan-Arabic groove. A stunning cover of Leonard Cohen's death ballad "Who by Fire," is a pivotal moment. And the opening track, the magnificent single "The Anal Staircase," is a strong contender for Coil's single definitive recording… a savagely perverse dance floor workout that seems to seethe with hot man-on-man action. Guests participants include Marc Almond (here doing business under the alias "Raoul Revere"), and Jim "Foetus" Thirlwell.
