Album Title: Wonderful Life

A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THIS ALBUM: ‘Wonderful Life’ was a 1964 soundtrack album by Cliff Richard with The Shadows. But this is NO ordinary copy – FAR FROM IT – this special double record set was a VERY limited edition run limited to 150 copies for the cast and set members from the movie. Pressed on the e.e.r. label (Elstree Extra Range) with compliments by the film producer Kenneth Harper – all information as seen on the record labels. This is one of the rarest albums I have ever seen, had or offered on Ebay by a major recording artist, and few were or are much bigger than Cliff Richard. This from his most popular era recording with The Shadows. Unusually, I have not listed the song titles as they are not listed on the bespoke and much rarer e.e.r. cover. This is much more extended version of the regular soundtrack album that proved very popular in 1964 and peaked in the UK album charts at No. 2. But this very rare edition was never sold in records shops (of course), but given to ‘VIP’s from the film. 150 copies of any record is an incredibly low number, and the word ‘rare’ is being properly used for such an album. These rarely get seen, offered or even surface, it is quite likely of that tiny run, many are ‘lost’ or rendered unplayable over the 50 years since made. Well to put ‘rare’ into further context, this copy appear(ed) unplayed – I had to play this myself to check the sound quality and any potential flaws – well it plays Mint (as it should really). A huge nostalgia trip also, my parents were both Cliff Richard fans and I remember this album (and film) well from my childhood. That of course a regular Columbia pressing. I would imagine fans of this ever-popular singer would have never seen or heard this particular extended, very special edition, and with so few around, this is hardly surprising. Logically, most on the set given one of these I am sure kept it, thus only a tiny percentage of the 150 copies will ever be made available, and few in this remarkable condition. A similar pressing of ‘Summer Holiday’, also on the same label with an ever fewer run of 80 copies from 1963 also was made as a special run for cast and set members, this I also have, but side one of the three sided set has significant marks and not yet sure if I will offer it. It clearly being ever rarer than this but both have vast catalogue prices being valued both the same. So for now, I will offer this stunning and ultra rare piece of popular music history – the second rarest Cliff Richard UK album ever made – it could indeed be a one-off opportunity and highly likely a now once-played copy has ever been offered for sale. Songs from the film and dialogue all included in this four-sided double LP, and the cover only printed one side for this rare and very different custom version. Label/Format: e.e.r (Elstree Extra Range) with matt and mostly smooth surfaces. The inner ring area around the hole are textured.

Label Conditions: All four are immaculate as new. Ultra clean, fresh and hugely attractive, I can see no spindle traces at all.

Cat Number: Elstree Extra Range (this has no specific catalogue number as it was made commercially available).

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 145 / 130 grams.

Rarity: 150 copies for a major recording star goes beyond rare – but I will not use the word ‘impossible’. However internet evidence suggests only a tiny few have ever surfaced to be offered for sale, and I doubt in this quite magnificent barely played condition.

Brief Info: One of Cliff Richard’s most popular albums, a soundtrack from 1964. Backed by The Shadows, this extended double set that most will have never seen, let alone heard, takes the listener directly into the film set. Beautifully recorded and pressed, this major rarity is one of the two Holy Grail albums on e.e.r. given with compliments by the film producer Kenneth Harper. I doubt if these records will ever be found or heard better.

Cover Grade and Format: AROUND EXCELLENT: a single format with a laminated front. The back has no print at all, but has spine text as seen in close-up. The back however does have an external 3-flipback construction and has the unique design and e.e.r. text and totally different colour artwork. Printed and made in England, uncredited.

Cover Front: Little to fault on this 50-year-old cover: the laminate remains shiny, fresh and clear, it has no lifting and very few creases at all. Any present very fine and light. No dulling and barely any marks. This being the most relevant side grades on its own as Excellent(++).

Cover Back: The bare white card back has minor grubbiness and a few toning spots or gentle marks. The flipbacks all solid and undamaged. Again, there is no text or pictures at all on this totally bare back.

Top Edge: One tiny surface chip only and still mainly straight.

Bottom Edge: Barely any wear at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp, the card is thicker than average and this has thickened a little more viewed end-on. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: The spine is in superb condition, and little short of as made. Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends gently taper in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Fairly small tip rubs and a little tip cresae on the bottom right. Fine to very fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this unique Wonderful Life variant cover. The bare back just a little aged, but now 50, which is a tremendous age for any vinyl album, this is almost nit-picking for a plain card area. Finding this better? – Well you decide.

The Inner Sleeves: This was purchased with two plain white unlined, thicker inner sleeves. Both look new, I cannot vouch for them being original as I have no others to compare them with.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR MINT (Sides 1, 2, 3). EXCELLENT(+): (Side 4), this has one fine surface line mark that has NO sound whatsoever. A superb visual pair that are very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A pair I played once and both barely run-in in vinyl terms. Visually in almost unbelievable condition, how many 50-year-old mono records will ever survive like this by a major recording superstar? For Cliff Richard fans and collectors, well these speak for themselves.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to their high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are beyond minuscule and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Will this immensely rare e.e.r. special edition exist better? – fairly unlikely I would think. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these exceptional records. They will prove near impossible (yes the word IS justified here) to find better and my highest possible recommendation is mandatory. If this is wanted, do not lose it, I am unlikely to ever find another.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
