· CHUCK BERRY – CHUCK BERRY TWIST (also known as “MORE CHUCK BERRY”) – 1960 CHESS RECORDS MONO LP 1465
· GENUINE U.S. PRESSING
· VERY EARLY PRESSING CIRCA 1963 ON BLUE, MATTE (NOT GLOSSY), CHESS MONO LABEL WITH SILVER PRINT.
· NOTE: THIS ALBUM WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED AS “CHUCK BERRY TWIST” IN 1960; A FEW WEEKS LATER, IT WAS RELEASED IN U.K. WITH SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGED TITLE (MORE CHUCK BERRY), DIFFERENT COVER, AND DIFFERENT TRACK LISTING. AFTER THE BRITISH RELEASE NEARLY TOPPED THE CHARTS IN U.K. , CHESS RECORDS REPACKAGED THE REMAINING U.S. COPIES OF THE “CHUCK BERRY TWIST” RECORDS INTO NEW COVERS AND RENAMED THE ALBUM “MORE CHUCK BERRY” AFTER THE BRITISH RELESE. ALL PRESSINGS OF “MORE CHUCK BERRY” ON BLACK LABELS (AND WHITE LABEL PROMOS, TOO) HAVE A “CHUCK BERRY TWIST” RECORDS PACKAGED INSIDE THE 'MORE CHUCK BERRY' COVERS. “CHUCK BERRY TWIST” IS THE ORIGINAL, FIRST PRESSING OF THIS ALBUM. “MORE CHUCK BERRY” IS THE SECOND PRESSING - EXCEPT IN GREAT BRITAIN, WHERE “CHUCK BERRY TWIST” WAS NEVER RELEASED UNDER THIS TITLE.
· DEEP GROOVE PRESSING (ON ONE SIDE ONLY)
· THIS IS NOT AN IMPORT, RECORD CLUB RELEASE OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.
· ORIGINAL, THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)
· CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS
· VERY THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING
· THE RECORD HAS A ‘SHELDON’ STAMP IN THE TRAIL-OFF VINYL (DEAD WAX) AREA, WHICH IS GENERALLY CONSIDERED A PROOF OF AUTHENTICITY OF THE FIRST PRESSING.
· As far as we know, this album has NEVER been available on legitimate Compact Disc or in any other way, manner or format.

When the Twist hit the fans (circa Chubby Checker-mania of 1960/61) and Chuck Berry got hauled off into a federal slammer for, um…transporting the streetwalker across the state line, the Chess brothers suddenly decided to reopen the box of old Chuck Berry studio material (by then, he'd already started serving his 5-year prison sentence) and - you guessed it - market his old Rock & Roll material as…gasp!…TWIST! What a twisted notion!! But then, many a black artist was robbed of their royalty in this fashion. On the bright side, though: this is a very young Chuck Berry at his bounciest, raunchiest R&R mood ever.
***
More Chuck Berry (A/K/A Chuck Berry Twist) was a compilation album that made perfect sense in England. England's Decca label had held the distribution rights to the Chess label in England until 1958, and had gotten exactly one LP of his material out — the rights shifted to Pye Records in 1960, who rushed out his then current album and a 14-song LP (Chuck Berry) of some of his best songs from the years up to 1960, and then followed it up with this. Drawn on earlier singles and material off of albums up through Rockin' at the Hops (which Pye had missed out on), it wasn't much less coherent a record than most of Chess' own releases, though one wishes they'd found a track other than "Anthony Boy" (one of Berry's weaker LP cuts) to include among the dozen tracks here. Still, the overall thrust, amid solid rockers like "Little Queenie" and "Carol," included not only a fair amount of blues but some Berry rockers with more adult suggestiveness and serious overtones, such as "Brown Eyed Handome Man" and "Reelin' and Rockin'." You can bet your bottom dollar that Keith Richards and Brian Jones wore out the grooves on at least one copy, learning "Carol" and "Beautiful Delilah."
(REVIEW REPRINTED COURTESY OF BRUCE EDER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
For its extraordinary contribution to the contemporary music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, songwriters and general public, or for some other inherent quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, show business professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, the legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice , Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton, Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). · CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).
(d) Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS NEAR MINT !
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 2 (back side).
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)
- Cover has one corner slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
