Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of light spindle marks on side one and barely any at all on side two. This rare record looks hardly even played.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very good weight for this record and label.

Rarity: Rare: and something of a ‘lost’ prog gem. It sold very poorly indeed and is seldom seen or offered, especially with the insert.

Brief Info: A very elusive album on a major label, this sold very poorly indeed there is no justification for that fact. This was something of a change of direction for this soulful vocalist. Here joined by The Hill which included Steve Hammon on guitar, formely of Fat Matress and Peter Robinson of Quatermass on keyboards. This album features a great version of ‘Black Sheep of the Family’ as featured on Quatermass album. A distinct progressive feel to this set and Farlowe is in superb form with his deeply powerful vocal. The man himself regarded it as one of his favourite works and it’s failure to capture the attention is deserved was a real disappointment. This album included an insert printed on brown paper and is even more elusive than the album itself and seldom seen. Well this copy includes it and is guaranteed original. Reproducing this would be nigh-on impossible as it’s printed on corrogated brown paper, one side is smoother, the other rippled. So something of ‘lost’ prog gem and for once, complete. One that was issued in 1970, missed and sunk without trace, a record demanding attention and few will be disappointed.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: .

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(-): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt finish. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and includes the rare original insert lyric sheet.

Cover Front: A hint of grubbiness and a little light rubbing on the very edges with a few fine and faint surface marks. Just enough to remind it’s a 41-year-old cover but overall, still attractive and it will never prove easy to find much better, the lack of creasing a real bonus.

Cover Back: All very similar again, devoid of ringwear and that will prove very unusual indeed.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The top of both sides has a brown mark, those apart, little else to really fault with any set-off or grubbiness very light and faint.

Top Edges: The stain mentioned above is seen but has lesser visual impact as it’s near a brown area of the artwork. Some moderate rubbing on the dark left area, any elsewhere shows little as it’s white.

Bottom Edges: Light rubbing on the front, moderate on the back.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on the edge.

Spine and Text: A very fine fine for a difficult cover. Solid, straight, uncompressed with just a mild tilt to right (being critical). Folded quite square with edges meet up fairly closely and near parallel. All text is perfect and unworn which has to be yet another bonus on this wear-prone cover.

Corners: Moderate rubbing, modestly apparent on the lighter right ones. Fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A rare and difficult cover in highly respectable condition. It should please many collectors but not the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: only marked down a little due to darkening, actual real wear is minimal. Barely any creasing and two immaculate crisp window circles to show clear, if a little crinkled lining. All edges unsplit with no repairs and looking just right for it’s considerable age. This includes the date code of 1/0670, hence a proven original. This rare record was owned by the one owner who purchased it from new.

The Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT: no wear but a couple of parallel creases near one edge. That apart, as new and immensely rare. Printed both sides on ribbed brown paper, similar to what used to be used for parcels (and maybe still is by some). The song lyrics printed on the corrigated ‘lined’ side and band artwork on the smooth side. All edges crisp with no tears and very clean too. The creases the only blemishes and this elusive insert is guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks ultra faint and few. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare progressive record plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this one significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
