CHIMAIRA Pass Out Of Existence Deluxe Edition hails from 2022 and is a SEALED limited edition and numbered 3LP set issued on colored vinyl. Chimaira was an American heavy metal band from Cleveland. Formed in August of 1998, the group was a member of the new wave of American Heavy Metal scene. The band’s name comes from the word Chimera, a monstrous creature in Greek Mythology. Throughout its history the band has had numerous line up changes, leaving vocalist Mark Hunter as the only constant member. Chimaira's music is considered nu metal, groove metal and metalcore, with elements of death metal, thrash metal, hardcore punk, and industrial metal. Prior to Chimaira, Hunter and bassist Jim LaMarca were part of a previous band known as Skipline. After that band dissolved, Hunter was contacted by guitarist Jason Hager who was part of metalcore band Ascension to form a new group. They both recruited friends and previous bandmates Jason Genaro on drums and Andrew Ermlick on bass to complete the official line up of Chimaira in 1998. In 1999 the band added guitarist Rob Arnold to “thicken” their sound. The band recorded its first demo in January 1999 and spent much of the year doing various live shows around the U.S. That year Andrew Ermlick left and was replaced by Rob Lesniak. They recorded a second demo during that year and began to receive widespread airplay on several college radio stations in the Midwest. After landing a spot performing “Dead Inside” on the short-lived USA-network show Farmclub.com, Chimaira was signed to Roadrunner Records. They recorded their debut EP, This Present Darkness, which was released in 2000 via indie label East Coast Empire and charted in the top 10 at metal radio. Shortly after the release, they aligned with manager Thom Hazaert and continued to tour the U.S., playing consistently with bands Hatebreed and God Forbid. They recorded demo versions of several new tracks including, “Dead Inside,” “Severed,” and “Taste My….” as well as a cover of the Cure’s “Fascination Street,” which Hazaert shopped, eventually gaining interest from several major labels. During this time the band also contributed a cover of the Accept classic, “Balls to The Wall” to the ECW Wrestling album Anarchy Rocks Vol. 2. The band signed with Roadrunner and quickly recorded it’s debut album Pass Out Of Existence in 2001 with producer Murdock. By this time Jim LaMarca was now bassist and Chris Spicuzza was handling electronics. Shortly after the release of the album and the tour to follow, Jason Hager left the band. Matt DeVries from Ascension was recruited to take over as rhythm guitarist. Pass Out Of Existence also featured a guest appearance from Deftones’ guitarist Stephen Carpenter on the track, “Rizzo.” Unlike other Chimaira records, Pass Out Of Existence was recorded with seven-string guitars in dropped A tuning. It emphasizes programming and sampling and has been considered less heavy than some of their following albums. The album leans more towards nu metal rather than the groove metal style featured in their later material. In October 2001, the band would join and befriend Slayer on their God Hates The World Tour. The album cover is featured in the movie, The Rules Of Attraction, along with other albums by Roadrunner bands Fear Factory and Slipknot. They would later tour with both bands in the Jägermeister Tour of 2004.
