Oklahoma City sludge metal-tinged noise rockers Chat Pile continue their ever prolific streak with the follow up to 2025's collaborative effort with cosmic folk instrumentalist Hayden Pedigo - In The Earth Again. Where 2022's acclaimed debut God's Country tore right to the heart of modern American malaise with material unpacking the opioid and homelessness crises, and 2024's Cool World expanded the scope to touch on more global topics inspired by the Ukraine and Gaza conflicts, Who Loves The Sun explores how a collective indifference for a decaying world defines this new century. Spanning imagery of coastlines devouring cities as a result of inaction on climate change, the dread of working dead-end jobs, and the species' collective submission to data-driven inauthenticity, the album thematically depicts the common experience of existing in a doom loop which permeates all aspects of our lives. Musically, the band push simultaneously towards even more ferociously heavy and genuinely discomforting soundscapes, while embracing more 90s alt rock melodies and hooks, elevated by Nightosphere vocalists Claire Hannah and Brittany Sawtelle lending their otherworldly harmonies to 'Intruder' and 'Influence', while Hayden Pedigo returns to add spectral flourishes to 'Family Funeral'. Continuing to experiment and build upon their own unique brand of crushing noise rock cacophony, while leaving some weighty subject matter to chew over, Who Loves The Sun is testament to Chat Pile being one of the most authentic and poignant acts to come out of the metal underground this decade.
