One has the tendency to relate certain types of music to certain record labels. Prestige, for instance, is known for its jazz roster. It comes as a surprise, then, to the post-millennium listener when the label reissues roots music recorded during the 1960s. But it shouldn't. Once upon a time, Prestige worked side-by-side with Vanguard and Folkways to bring LP buyers the best in folk-based music. The Charles River Valley Boys were born in the green pastures of Yale and Harvard in 1959 and blossomed into a crack outfit of down-home pickers. Bluegrass and Old Timey Music originates from two albums recorded by the group in 1962 and 1964, the first known by the same title, the second by The Charles River Valley Boys With Tex Logan. With traditional material, high-lonesome vocals, and fancy picking, a listener would never guess that Bob Siggins, John Cooke, Fritz Richmond, and Joe Val were anything but the real deal. The band's version of "White Dove" is every bit as raw as the Stanley Brothers' take, while "Uncle Pen" pays sincere respect to the father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe. The amazing thing about these recordings is how authentic they sound. Many accused young musicians involved in the folk revival of mimicking the old styles but failing to grasp traditional music at a deeper level. Again and again, The Charles River Valley Boys offer felt versions of classic bluegrass repertoire ("Angel Band," "Away Out on the Mountain"). Bluegrass and Old Timey Music offers a great intro to the Charles River Boys and shows how good revival bluegrass could be.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some visible writing on its back side (large filing code written in faded green marker, about 2 x 3 inches in size)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-         Minor, barely visible, water stain noted on back panel

-         Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a microscopic price code written in one corner)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
