Originally a beat-tape side-project, Seattle-based instrumental funk outfit Champagne Bubblebath was created by drummer Grant Schroff from Polyrhythmics. Golden-era hip-hop and garage funk are core tenets of the sound cooked up with core contributors Jason Gray, Ben Bloom and Jimmy James, and this is their debut LP. Drums set the foundation with dry, slightly swung patterns as guitar lines drift through and are often processed with light saturation, while bass stays locked into steady ostinato movement. The material references late sixties funk textures alongside mid-nineties sample-based beats. It's loveably laidback from the percolating loops of 'Philly Cakes' to the more psyched out and cosmic unfurling of 'Jaba'.
