With the likes of Stereolab and The Lemonheads having announced album releases after truly lengthy pauses, The Chameleons have joined in to surprise us with their first album of new material in 24 years. The Chameleons' stock has kept rising recently with the onset of the post-punk revival and interest in melancholic music from Manchester that's Joy Division adjacent. The Chameleons never quite got the level of press that their peers had but left behind a back catalogue that's up there with the best post-punk of all time. The new album shows their songwriting maturity and for the first time, they've been able to use real orchestral strings on a couple of the songs, which were arranged and performed by Pete Whitfield at Real Strings in Manchester. The single 'Saviours Are A Dangerous Thing' has a prog feel with some astonishing lead guitar underpinning a bewitching vocal melody and thought-provoking biblical imagery in the lyrics. The Chameleons it seems are thriving in their new era.
